Is Alatreon doable as a solo gunlance? If so which is the recommended gunlance playstyle and element?

Yes, I've seen videos on YouTube, but they're also using end game gear. There's one guy who did it with a Safi Fire Normal 7, but he's using Fatalis armor IIRC. It also seemed specialized since he was rolling with a 4 piece fatalis set + velk helm + velk on the safi GL.

When I came back to World, I told myself I'd learn a new weapon and at least beat Alatreon. After several trial and errors with the SnS and lance, i eventually ended up with learning the gunlance.

I know there's a DPS check with breaking the horns, but will the low element on a safi GL do?

If you are good the elemental DPS check is not a problem , but even if you ain't , roll with kjaar or frostfang and do slaplance.
Shellings CAN actually do the elemental dps check as the do a bit of fixed fire damage , but its very little.
Overall perfectly solable with slaplance playstyle , and any other if you just eat the nukes with insurance/safeguard and kill it before the last one.

Yeah, this is what I read. Get felyne insurance and brute force the DPS check.
