Does the shelling type change a gunlance's deco/armor/skill priority or not at all?
I want to try out the gunlance, and given that the shell types change how you play, does this mean your deco and armor change too or not at all?

Not really, just the way you play it. You want Artillery, Capacity Boost or Evade Extender on any type of gunlance.

I guess the only thing to mention is the Capacity Boost. You still want it on every gunlance, of course, but it is vastly more important for Wide shelling. Going from 2 to 3 shells is a much more impactful difference than going from 5 to 6, or even 3 to 4. But since it's not a problem getting both artillery and capacity boost at the same time, it's not really relevant.

Yes, they do change, different styles of Gunlancing have different playstyles.

Normal : Bonus to shotgun burst, want +1 magazine Artillery and low-priority Sling ammo+5
Large : Bonus to shelling, wants +1 magazine, Focus+2, sling ammo+5 and Artillery, you want to land a loaded wyrmstake ASAP.
Wide : Kind of a mix because it has a bonus to wyvern fire and wymstake, shelling is mostly used for combos only, the wyrmstake scales from raw attack though so it's a bit of a pain to have it with artillery and all the other stuff.

Now keep that in mind this is purely focusing on the GUN part of it and not in the slapdancing, which offers a different style altogether and you can completely ignore the GUN part of the weapon to focus on raw attack, of course you can also mix-and-match as you see fit and make your "own" favorite playstyle, to mention that GL also goes well with Evade or Guard if you are fond of any of them (Evading in particular is popular, hop hop hop)

I'd like to point out too that there's also an awful exploit that makes it do insane damage because Capcom can't code for ♥♥♥♥, ignore it completely or at least until you learn the fundamentals first!

This. also its long not large.
And to add to that , with long you don't need any attack or crit skills as you almost always just use the shellings.

Can I make do without the extra shell on a normal GL? I don't have one yet, lol. This and having to build the 3 p zorah magdaros (im assuming Guiding Lands?) are the only things stopping me from going at it.
