Little confused on heavy bowguns
So from my understanding different bowguns get better or lower performance from certain ammo types but with how scarce elemental ammo seems that seems like a waste to focus on for the upgrade paths.

What are the other differences between them? Do different ones have different capacity for example? Should I just focus on the ones I like best cosmetically?

I am an IG main and have a pretty dope build for it, but for Alatreon and Fatalis ive used HBG.

Things I know are:
You can block like a Lancer and have to craft ammo on the fly, so use radial menue and take ammo + gunpowder with you. I have 2 builds, one with Spread 3 and one with Sticky 3 + Cluster 3 and like the sticky more.
Afaik Bow and DB works great with elemental and I am not sure if ele is needed for HBG. Only 1 Boss has an elemental damage check and maybe it would work there, but in generel I would avoid ele ammo.

I am not sure how far you are, but in terms of cosmetics, use the "Layer" function and apply a skin you like instead of good looking bad weapons and armors.

Heavy bowguns are mostly known for their raw (non-elemental) damage output. If you want to use elemental ammo, you might want to look into using a light bowgun.

The bowguns vary in how much of each ammo type they can hold in one clip, yes. Each ammo type will have its own clip size for any given bowgun.

Bowguns vary in the following ways:
- The types of ammo they can use (available ammo types).
- How much of each ammo type they can hold in one clip (maximum number of shots of this ammo that can be fired before needing to reload).
- How much recoil a bowgun generates when it fires a given ammo type (refire rate).
- How long it takes for a bowgun to reload a clip for a given ammo type (reload speed).
- Some bowguns have special attributes they only apply to certain ammo types, like auto-reloading after every shot or burst firing (rapid fire).
- Heavy bowgun special ammo types -> Wyvernheart (close-range machine gun) or Wyvernsnipe (long-range penetrating single shot).
- Light bowguns use Wyvernblast special ammo, which behaves like a temporary mine placed on the ground, though this behaviour can be modified.

Besides varying in how much attack power they have, bowguns also have something called 'deviation', which is how much your aim shifts every time the bowgun fires.

I don't recommend this unless you only care about how your bowgun looks or its appearance really bothers you. You can always adjust the appearance of your bowgun later.

Here's a video on light bowguns vs heavy bowguns:

I was trying them because I remembered the passive block from 4U. I didn't get far in 4U because the 3DS was uncomfortable for my hands.

I kinda figured this was the case with elemental ammo.

I didn't know the ammo type bonuses went beyond damage or that there was restrictions. Wyvernfire was one of the main reasons I wanted to try heavy bowguns because I remembered the entrenching rapid fire from 4U.

If you wanna play ranged of any type id highly suggest using ammo mod.
You can either go infinite ammo, a bit cheaty i reckon.
or
You can use carry 99 ammo or something to that effect. You still have to craft the ammo but not the arbitrary and rather stupid minuscule limits are removed and make ranged more enjoyable. Not really needed for the bow but thats up to you.

In the end, its your game, do as you wish with it.
Fun is most important.
