how do i break paolumu's back?
i've wallbanged it 6 times. managed to hit the back once with my great sword with a pitfall trap (still can't cultivate spiderweb or ivy). mounted it twice and did the finisher on the back, did i hit the neck both times? it still isn't broken. i only broke one wing and now it's dying. i want to do this once before i get full research level and never touch this bugged hitbox monster again.

No secret to it. If you want something broken, keep hitting it until it breaks. Wallbangs won't help much as you're slamming its face into a wall, not its back (though the knockdown will give you the opportunity to land hits where you want).

As for your ivy/spiderweb problem, complete the optional quests Prickly Predicament and Royal Relocation.

And as a general curiosity: Why do you need to break its back so badly?

i've been able to break all parts on every monster up until now with my great sword. and btw "keep hitting it"? there is no "hitting it", the wing hitbox is so inflated and so are the legs. i've been able to break rath backs fine by walking up to em toppled and charge slashing because their wing hitboxes are not as fat as my c*ck.

basically: i want to max research levels for monsters in as few quests as possible and paolumu is pissing me off because it leaves barely any tracks, and can't even get a quarter of a research level from hunting it normally i have to spam traps and am burning all of my resources in this garbage research level system that hopefully won't return

but truly i'm just venting, i would've gotten it done by now if i didn't get so worked up over a hitbox designed exclusively for pierce gunners to hit ffs.

just spent 15 shock traps and 5 pitfall traps to get paolumu from research level 5 to 6

I find the easiest way to break monster backs is through mounts. When they bang themselves into walls to try to throw you off, they take tons of part damage. So, when you see it start moving towards the wall, stop stabbing and move to its back if you're not there already. When it starts the attack animation, move off the back so you don't get thrown off and let it complete the animation. Doing this twice is usually enough to break a part.

Equip partbreaker, topple it then hit its back

i can't. i don't believe any melee weapon can. an overhead swing while touching it's collision hull at any angle whether if it's in front of the wing or inside the wing or behind it near the tail will get eaten by the wings or tail. this doesn't happen with raths or legiana.

i've tried using pitfall traps and going behind it, and cool i could hit it once but that's nowhere near enough.

Partbreaker + airborne + insect glaive, then spam the funny spin move.

Paolumu tracks are mostly found in the NW section of the Coral Highlands. You shouldn't have many problems maxing out its research track, and you certainly don't need to break its back to do so. You're mostly making this hard for yourself.

i already did it, 20 hours ago
