Is there a pattern to the steamworks?
Every single google search says "no it's just rng slot machine lol" but when I play it and pay attention to the cat and the old man's emotes and the rhythm of the music there's clearly some type of pattern and I can usually get the hit the 3 lights

if you get the first one correct, then it's a 50% chance to get the next one correct, and then obviously if you've got 2 right then you've got all 3 right. it is chance, just a really simple / easy one to succeed at. doing the AFK mode by holding R2 or whatever it is also gets all the lights pretty often too

If no one has datamined the scripting of the mini-game, no one truly knows how it works.

Personally, I believe there is a weighted chance that you can get all the guesses right regardless of what you choose, or, that your chances are higher than the "1/6" chance players just immediately assume is how it works because they just take things at face value. Also, the majority of players have likely never programmed anything ever, or dealt with "random" chance in game design (it's not truly random).

It's anecdotal, but I've done this minigame thousands of times over the years, and have sometimes used autoplay scripts, and it's clear to me that my chances are closer to 30% than 17%, which I would guess Capcom "weighted" the chances as much to not make the minigame too annoying, while maintaining its relative simplicity.

I could be wrong, but at the same time, I've never seen anyone actually datamine the scripting involved.

Just hold the spacebar. It's a slot machine with no pattern.

There is an auto steamworks tool in nexus mods that does the tapping for you. It reads whatever input the game wants for a perfect combo all the time if you want it to.
