When do you get the ability to meld gems?

Im asking what lets you meld a gem, since I can only meld a few gems and it feels like it's because I've gotten them before? Is that it?

Ok well it says something like "you do not have any materials fit for melding this gem", therefore where can I see what I need for each gem?

If you cannot see it then the corresponding monster or area has not yet unlocked for you, so don't worry about it.

Are you sure, because one of the gems that I couldn't meld and recently needed was just a legiana gem which drops from high-rank legiana, but I am already MR3.

I already got the gem from investigations, but still.

Oh you mean actual monster gems, as in drops. Pretty sure when you get access to melding a new tier of rare drops (be it gems, mantles, etc), it unlock for all monsters at once that drop it. Maaning: if you have access to Odogaron gem, Rathalos ruby and so on, you have access to a legiana gem. You don't even need to have dropped it previously. So, check the list again and make sure you have not missed it.
