Weapon Stats for JAN 22 2024 for those interested
According to First Wyverian:

(rank/name/usage)

1. Longsword 23%
2. Greatsword 10%
3. Bow 10%
4. Dual Blades 9%
5. Charge Blade 8%
6. Insect glaive 8%
7. Heavy Bow Gun 7%
8. Hammer 5%
9. Switch Axe 5%
10. Light Bow Gun 5%
11. Sword and Shield 3%
12. Gunlance 3%
13. Hunting Horn 2%
14. Lance 2%

Not many probably care much about weapon stats, but given the sudden rise in sales and players (top 10 on steamcharts, as of writing) I thought some people might be interested, or this information might be useful for someone wanting to learn a different weapon.

Aside from that, kinda surprising the Greatsword is number 2, almost certainly thought Dual blades would be

(Also shoutout to the 3 or so players keeping Lance and Hunting Horn alive)

There is literally no bad weapons in MHW only bad players, if you're losing quests because you're running out of time and not doing enough damage, that's not the weapons at fault
if I'm running out of time with weapons like lance when I can reasonably complete the task with a GS or switch axe because the lance is bad and lacks mobility as well as damage then it's kinda bad...

I just see it as another teamplay weapon like the horn that people like to ironically use solo to buff themselves and pretend like it's not a weapon intended to be used in a party.
I'm one of those lance players. And when I'm not, it's gunlance

how you do tha damage?

I just drop my GS on something and do like 150dmg meanwhile the gunlance is farting out 40s.

edit: not to mention wide shelling is actually ridiuclous.

Woo! Just recently tried Gunlance after maining Lance :D
Some of those feel weird though...swear every time I actually try online its only Long sword and bow guns being used...never see Great swords
I actually like the gameplay of gunlance... it's one of the first weapons I tried when I started playing the franchise... the "pewpew" is fun.

but after about the 3rd mission it just becomes worse than other things where you can actually do things like move and deal damage.

I don't really focus on shelling all that much, honestly. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I'm used to the slow and steady weapons of GS, lance and gunlance, so it's mainly playing around that style.

Granted, I stopped playing Iceborne before Alatreon was added, but, outside of AT stuff and Scarred Yian-Garuga I've fought everything solo gunlance.

Persistence and patience, I guess.

patience only works until you run out of time tho lol

My love, Gunlance not getting the attention it deserves since 2k18...

Speaking of unloved weapons, I guess it's time I undust the good old stick of poking, I actually enjoy playing Lance a lot.

I actually just picked up Lance my self, it does feel clunky, as Im used to the SnS, but its very methodical. Its deceptively challenging to play, theres more to it than Poke, Poke, Poke, Hop.
It's so strange to see SnS so low, especially after Iceborne. It's a beast of a weapon now, probably the biggest disparity between weapon popularity and how strong it actually is out of the whole roster.
as one of those new players, how do i find people to play with? just through the SOS system?
Bow at 10% is probably the biggest surprise to me, since it has both a high skill floor and a high skill ceiling

You're always connected to the internet, so If you want to play with others, when you load up your character, it'll give you 3 options - select "create a session" and adjust the settings to how you want them. Otherwise, the SOS is a way hunters can join you temporarily, without following you back to the hub
I think im close to 1,000 hunts on Lance. 2% is fine. I will gladly remain the 2% that doesnot and willnot cart. I can run 4x faster then all other hunters, I can cut tails and KO from the front, I have a mobile way of launching myself off the ground into a mount when ever i feel like. Blocking on the move and clutch claw countering everything in sight. I play all weapons but when that tempered furious rajang is enraged freaking out I will be there poking away.:cozytf2mug:

Brother, I don't wanna stir the pot but I am inclined to call Skill Issue; you see, lance has 3 counter attacks, you are supposed to use them to constantly harass the monsters until they die either by how annoying the lance player needs to be to them or the 3,000 stab wounds you inflicted upon them, it's usually the former btw.

Bad jokes aside, Lance might have one of the lowest DPS performance among the melee weapons but it has one of the more consistent ones through out all of them, it's seriously a matter of staying on the monster 24/7, like 2 kids on forceful married to each other in a cult... Ok i'll stop with the awful taste jokes.

This guy has the right idea, thank you btw, glad you're having fun.
