Timers are only scary when they're 15-30 minutes.
Otherwise, yes, most of the other MH games had "expeditions" in a quest format
Fatalis is just difficult. 30 min timer + high health + high damage + not a lot of opening + better break head at least once to increase survival chance in p3.
if you want to just explore and roam, do it in 'expedition' mode - no time limit. roam to your hearts desire. monsters will actually spawn randomly as you go.
at the start when you don't deal much damage you might time out fighting a monster here and there, but that doesn't mean you need to rush, its more, you need to keep a good flow of hits going.
as you practice you'll get better. be sure to memorize the combos for your weapons - that's half the battle right there.
Expedition mode is excellent for doing mini quests and gathering resources. Start with an empty inventory (maybe some potions and a farcaster), and equip harvesting gear. If monsters show up, bang them into a wall or start some turf wars for free shinys. No need to commit to a fight. There are also local tribes, seek them out and do their missions.
the 50min timer is awful, i rarely ever have to rush, but you cant exactly take your time, afk, etc
i think ill go and see if there is a mod to either completely remove all timers or stop the expedition mode from deleting monsters

Now expedition is good.
There were Account Item and Harvest Tour quests though, because "Guild Rules" require quests to have a timer, cart limit, and quest fee.
Time's hardly an issue unless you're specifically wasting time or soloing something without solo-scaling (which are few - Collaboration and Title Update monsters).
There are certain hunts that ♥♥♥♥ you over with a timer though. One hunt I failed because of the timer running out is due to the map layout being bad and the monster flying from the low area to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mountain forcing you to chase after it.
Also, the gathering set can be crafted very early on and that one was ideal for me when I started playing, getting double the honey for mega potions, not losing insect carves, faster gathering, more tries per mine nodes/bone piles, good stuff.. people can get these skills from the a couple starter sets.
There's one thing I will agree with here, which is to not spend too much time in LR (low rank) expeditions. Or maybe someone can correct me on that? I didn't do more than just the quests in there.
45-50 mins per hunt. if you cant close a hunt in an hour...
