If you have Iceborne, make use of imbuing your kinsect with slinger ammo so it's stronger and easier to get extracts, and land some powerful descending thrusts.
What I did to get started was watch a video tutorial on it. Once I was generally familiar with the controls/moveset, I tried things in the training room and decided what kind of move(s) would be my 'safe poke' for when I had a small opening, and what combo I would use when the monster was down. I also noted which attacks swung vertically and which ones swung horizontally for the purposes of targeting specific monster parts.
If you're interested, here's the playlist for my playthrough on a new character where I'm mostly using the insect glaive.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr4tJVnzlWY&list=PLAOKAKKHju1VO1VzKaDKbWIPQct0EY_V-
You send the bug for 1 one of the 3 parts of the monster normally head, wing or legs it shows as red, white or orange you hit the part you return kinsect you repeat the 3 times.....and the tail is green it heals you
Strong attack tells where the bug will go weak attack to return shooting a monster like a sling where the bug will always go it is mostly a juggle between the first two and the shooting as let the bug on auto attack
You get buffed because of it you apply to the Cirque du Soleil with vault while on air you press jump if the monster got far from you to reach it otherwise quick attack to do a bunch of attack if you land on the monster you can press again to fly again or press strong attack to spin in the same place and go for a mount
and that is it the rest is repeat ad eternum and practice
As I do like matching the element to the monsters with Kinsects just for that little bit of extra damage.
Only other pet peeve I have with Insect Glaive, is no matter what skills or buff I have. Power Prolonger or Duration buffs. The Triple Buff will fall off precisely at the worst time possible.

However the more you upgrade them and the more of the speed stat you get the more reliable the Kinsect becomes.
Also by high rank you're expected to have your Kinsect attacking at all times while having at least the red buff(Usually from the head) up at all times to have good damage/support.
This requires you to land your marking attacks reliably and on proper spots based on damage type of the kinsect if your going for damage.
Ps. Don't ignore the dust effect and glaive boosts as some kinsects/glaives are purely support(healing/paralysis) or pure damage(Blast/poison but mostly blast) but their stats don't always match what they are trying to do.
So, even though it's a great weapon to evade with, you don't use the aerial attack to do all the damage. What you do, is you send your bug out, get all 3 colors and power up your weapon, after that, you mark the monster for your bug to attack while you also attack it. It's a slightly complex weapon, but it's the best one AND, you get to be a helicopter :D
Kinsect is fun. It does however play very different from most others. Your evades are near useless, but you got some neat agility instead. Thats why its so hard in the beginning. Without the at the start near useless moth the damage is pretty low. You also lack some of that agility and monsters will chase you down like no other. Where others just smash two buttons and are done you will often need to make a run for it- turn around and use comparably complex attack patterns.
Your glaive aint nothing. Especially in the beginning you will probably be more of a roflcopter rather than petmaster. And ride monsters, often! Stay airborne, deep dive through a monster, slap even flying foes in mid air! Jump from one target area to another-And use your pet in close range when you move in for an attack series - it lacks speed (->range) and endurance at the start.
When your moth gets up to speed however (literally!) this class goes from already most complex in aiming and movement to even double the complexity!
You always fight at two positions at once and igniting some moth infused explosions in a deepdive right through several weakspots is uhm- lets say very rewarding
All the while you can heal, in doubt make a run for it while your pet keeps the enemy busy, play "the floor is lava"- which you know it might very well be- shave Nergi and play rodeo.
The damage looks low in comparison at a first glance, but if you factor in agility, therefor ability to reach and hit spots, as well as the comparable high attack speed and the buffs- its decent with good utility and survivability.
Its my favorite pick for solo for a reason. It can do all and everything here.
Its an easy weapon, jump and spin to win, send bugs to different points of a monster Head, wings, tail to gather buffs, 3 buffs will make your attacks stronger.
