Shouldn't Furious Rajang count as a deviant?
I mean, it got its tail cut off and is constantly in that super saiyan state.

To the veterans of the MH series, can you guys tell me the difference between variants and deviants?

Deviants=> survived an encounter with hunters. (Ratahalos and Dreadking Rathalos).
https://monsterhunter.fandom.com/wiki/Deviant

Variants=> having traits which set them apart from the other "identical" species. (Brachydios and Raging Brachydios).

Azure Rathalos is a Subspecies, not a variant.

No. Variants are monsters that have adapted to get stronger due to natural means, Raging Brachy gets a new slime mold, Furious loses it's tail, Shrieking have gone crazy due to Shara's singing, etc.
Deviants are monsters that have adapted specifically to hunters.
It makes more sense, in Japanese, Variants dont have special names, only special icons, so "Raging Brachydios" is just "Brachydios". You'd have Brachydios and Brachydios. Deviants were special in Japanese, because they were strong enough to earn special titles, like Astalos, and Blue Thunder Lord Astalos.
