The Defender longsword.
Go for defender longsword or if you can get at kt kulve taroth fire ls is one of the meta right now

Really, the defender longsword with its great stats and low detriments means its now one of the best swords to build.

unless you have ranged thunder builds and want to kill ATKT a dozen times to try to roll a taroth sword 'fire'.

compare defender LS with Divine slasher and Reaver calamity to understand just how good it is.

As other people have said, the Defender one. It's dirt cheap to craft and upgrade and manages to preform as well as Taroth Sword "Fire" (which was the best general use longsword before we got the Defender one).

So is it the "best"? Or just easier to craft? Just got back into the game after a while and got myself a Taroth Fire but if Defender is better, then im gona use that

Defender has the same raw as Taroth Fire with elementless on, plus blast and 2 augments. Defender LS is better.

It is better than taroth fire.

Taroth fire got 660 paper damage, short white sharpness, 0% crit chance, level 3 deco slot, 20 defence bonus, 1 augment. With non-elemental boost it will reach 726 (693 in IceBorne due to nerf on non-elemental boost)

Defender got 726 paper damage, pretty long white sharpness, 0% crit chance, no deco slot, no defence bonus, 300 blast, 2 augment.

Damage wise. The base attack value is the same in current version, provided that you install non-elemental boost on Taroth Fire. Defender packs an additional 300 blast, which is nice add-on as it works for all monsters. In IceBorne, defender longsword out-damage Taroth Fire due to the nerf on elementless deco. So defender longsword wins.

Cit chance. Both at 0% base crit chance. So draw.

Sharpness. Defender longsword has longer white sharpness if not the same. Defender wins.

Deco Slot. Theoretically, Taroth Fire wins due to 1 level 3 deco slot, but defender longsword does not require elementless deco. So I would say draw.

Defence bonus. Emmmm.....

Augments. Taroth Fire has only 1 while defender has 2. So defender wins.

To conclude, Defender Longsword V basically outclasses Taroth Fire in almost every way.

I want to comment on the augment slot. Because defender LS has 2 slots, you can use one slot for crit and one slot for health regen. This gives a nice 10% crit and you can get to 95% crit with lv3 weakness exploit, lv7 critical eye, and lv4 attack. This will change to 85% to 105% after IB releases. For taroth fire, because there is only one slot and mostly people will use it for health regen, you have to use maximum might to get to 100% crit. However, as we know, maximum might is no longer useful for LS in IB. So from the perspective of preparing for IB, I'd say Defender LS is the best LS, even better than jho because there is no way to make up for that -30 crit in IB.

before defender weapon was added

LS meta are Taroth Sword Fire and Kjarr Decay but you have to play RNG game with kulve taroth

else it's Deviljho or Lunastra Sword (Divine Slasher kinda garbage in my opinion)

and i never see anyone really talking about it but i find Wyvern Blade "Holly" to be another very good one

Since the Rathian LS is both easy to craft and relatively strong it's a good choice for someone taking on story elders. Not to mention it'll be the best in the expansion, if op is gonna play.

Hello,
I just start playing yesterday on PC. I'm not new to the serie because I had over 200h on Unite on PSP.
I was a main GS and I went for it on PC. So I took the defender that I quickly upgrade cause it's really cheap.
But I'm really surprised by this thread, saying it's one of the best GS of the game cause it cost absolutely nothing and need no stuff to farm.
So I'm quite disappointed because I farmed so much on unite to have a proper and powerful build but knowing that I'm handling the best GS of the game with rank 3 and less than 10 hours sounds really weird.
Same thing with the armour, they gave me the Defender Alpha it's a rare 6 armour and I can take out a Rathian with ease at low level wtf.

I guess (and hope) that they did this to make it easier to reach the high levels and to get bigger monsters but I'm really surprised about this.

Can someone enlightened me about this pls ? Thanks a lot

Hey abu, i just started playing again after a while again... i think this armor + weapon set of defender is just to rush through the game ready for next expansion, as some sets may be outdated due to new sets in the new expan

Gear is meant to get players to Iceborne ASAP, since that's coming out relatively soon. Defender GS isn't the best, also, Ignition GS is still better with elementless; that being said, Defender GS is still a good choice.
