Why do people love this game?
I was introduced to this game through me friend, who said it was similar to Dark souls. Having played both, I can safely say the only similar things about them are that you A. fight bosses B. roll and C. use less than 4 buttons to attack.

My friend loves this game to death. He has over 500 hours in it but I cannot fathom why. A lot of the game's reputation is built upon their monsters. These monsters i find have a lot of reused moves and all of them waste 7 minutes (1/3 of what it takes to kill a boss) of my time relocating.

I personally do not get hype when I see a monster I have killed twice before in mandatory quests (pukei-pukei) be reused for a third time. A big problem I have is the unskippable cutscenes ranging from 2 to 10 minutes for said reused bosses, which I was told is exclusive to MHW, but it is my only exposure to the series.

I have given this game 4 separate chances because I want to like it, but each time I end up leaving with the same problems I had since my first playthrough. Farming bosses does not feel worthwhile and is too time consuming, combat feels sluggish in a fast-paced game, and reskins with all of 2 new moves are held in unwarranted high esteem every single time.

You'll be fighting the same monsters throughout the game:
Great Jagras
Kulu Ya Kus
Jyuuratodus
Pukei Pukeis
Kushala Daora
And Kelbis.

Enjoy your short stay

Sometimes you just wanna get there and kill some monsters. But other than that, is just preference tbh, I heard a lot of my friends say this one was the best of the series, tho I myself never played the previous ones or rise.

It has a rather fun coop, if you don't take into account the cutscenes you need to unlock before being able to join. All in all, a great experience if you get into it, completely understandable if not tho.

You already seem to know why people love the game, you described some of the aspects after all. So, is it that hard to accept that it's just not your cup of tea? I for one think that Dark Souls games are massively overhyped and have a combat system that is way too simplistic. The first Dark Souls game that was any good was the third one, and Elden ring is their first game that actually feels like a properly realized vision. That doesn't mean I don't see why some people really like them.

I think I accepted that in my 2nd playthrough. It's only when I'm told on my 4th playthrough that I'm not giving the game a chance that I wonder why people love it so much. I only got this game due to the false advertising my friend used by saying it was very similar to dark souls. He has been dying on that hill for 3 years.

I had the same opinion as you when I first bought this game. I didn't enjoy it much since it's farming materials to build a set for a specific monster. However, Once I got into Iceborne, I started to enjoy it more and more. The monsters are getting harder, especially the end-game bosses.

I recommend just skimming through the MWH and getting to the end game. There's like a mod to skip cutscenes if you're not into it.

How far are you in this 4th playthrough?

I like how they really focused on gameplay and combat. It's an excellent game for people with a busy life. I can pick this up without having that... now what was I doing? It's easy to pick up after a few weeks.

And for me, the difficulty is just right. Not too hard (yet), but not a cakewalk either.

Each time I meet a new monster, I think: hmm.. not sure if I can do this. Beating them feels good. To me this game is a perfect challenge.

I'm halfway into Iceborne (not rushing) and I don't feel I'm overpowered yet. Maybe even little underpowered, but in a good way.

Normally this is not really my thing either. I'm more into strategy games or things like ONI or Kerbal Space Program.
Not sure why, but this game just clicks with me.

if i we're to describe what makes monster hunter:W so addictive it would be that every monster (at least large one) is a boss that can take you between 5-30 mins depending how skilled you are.
The immersion and the antecipation of preparing on astera hub for the monster, getting to the map, looking for tracks, finding the monster, and murdering it, over and over and over again until you have enough materials to make his armor set/weapon set.

every large monster in this game has an armor set with different stats/passive skill/Special Passive skills (For wearing 3 parts of the same set out of 5 after anjanath). Mix and matching armor parts and different weapons with different stats, to get the upper hand on the next monster.

the more i play and explore, the more i get used to monster routines, resources and hazards strong against them, and as your character gets more stuff and better, so does you.

plus the fighting and the combat itself, i get a huge dopamine hit whenever i manage to stun the monster, stagger the monster and make him exhaust, eventually tripping him and seeing his death animation as the monster twitch violently at his lass breath, so you can carve his parts.

Grinding is fun, even though its repetitive, you are always getting new stuff on a regular basis to try out (new elemental weapons, new armor sets, new skills for charms and decorations), investigations make the process way faster by giving you a challenge, rewarding excelence in play for more loot

there's a good variety of weapons(14) which means if u get bored of ur main weapon, u can always try something new, plus the intricate number of combos that each weapon has.

Plus u can help other fellow hunters, which is always a joy responding to SoS flares,

No offense but the first mistake is thinking this game similar to Dark Souls, you should scold your friend for saying that.

I have nearly 2000 hours into this game, so i'll list some of reason why this game is addicting for me:

- Grinding factor
As much as i hate RNG in this game, i can't deny everytime i manage to get things i want after a long grind it becomes a dopamine for my brain.

- Tons of various builds
This game has a lot...and i mean A LOT of weapons, armors, and skills. You beat one monster then you get 14 different varieties of weapons and new set of armor from that particular monster, each of them even have their own advantages and disadvantages as well, not to mention the skill set depend a lot on weapon you choose. For example, using focus skill will make your life as greatsword user easier or having offensive guard skill will make your shield weapons more lethal, in the end it makes crafting and building your set almost endless.

- Large amount of monster varieties
Having a good build is useless without good monsters to hunt, this game has 94 total of monsters with 23 Small monsters and 71 Large monsters to be more precise. It gives you an insight how much replayability this game has with those amount of monsters and weapon builds you can create.

- Siege Monsters and Festivals
One of reason people keep coming back to this game is siege monsters and festivals, and possibly one of main reason why a lot of sessions always full. This game mainly has 2 siege monsters, which is Kulve Taroth and Safi'jiiva and they reset every two weeks. Defeating them would unlock tons of new weapons and new set of armor, and hunting them require precise strategy unlike other monsters.

- SOS feature
This is probably my personal choice why this game is so addicting, which is helping people through SOS and co-op with strangers. Playing alone would be boring for a while, but with SOS feature it kinda solves it. Legit i made a lot of new friends on Steam simply by just responding their SOS and end up helping them through their journey in the game.

The unskippable cutscenes I understand, a lot of people dislike that.
Other than that though, this is a game where you need to grind and kill the same monsters repeatedly to get armour, weapons, upgrades, etc. If you don’t like to grind, you won’t enjoy this game, or monster hunter in general because grinding and killing the same monsters is kind of a key element to the games. Think that’s why a lot of MMO players enjoy this series, they love the grind.

I couldn't stand this game for 13 hours or so. Then it clicked and I've been hooked since.

The combat is really slow but still has nuance. Once I got into the rhythm it was way more fun.

It's a game that rewards skill and having knowledge of its many quirks and that's enjoyable. Monster that used to give me a hard time I roll over now.

That said, there's a bunch of obscure info and mechanics around, so if you're really struggling it might be good to hit up the Wiki or Reddit.

And yeah, it's nothing like DS, only on at a glance. I came into it with that mentality too and it was awful. You can't play as fast as you can play DS. Trying to do so will only lead to frustration.
