or dragon weapon for any phase
If he starts in his ice form then he's weak to fire weapons so a Kjarr fire weapon would be your best bet. If he starts in his fire form then a Kjarr ice weapon is the best choice.
You'll definetly need to break the horns consequently with this method, but in general these weapons are your best choice. It takes a bit of practice depending on your weapon of choice, but these weapons will deal the most damage and can finish the fight in the least amount of time.

Dual blades are really good
I got my first few clears using the xeno jiqa HBG, as it gets all the elemental ammos, use 5 piece Safi armor, and elemental attack skills to do fairly well
The alatreon dominator (the light bowgun) is another beast, it's really easy to play safe, but if you screw up, your always in 2 shot range, but if you miss some shots with the Safi armor, or are close to healing, but haven't started yet, you are in one shot range for some attacks. You will also be able to suppress escaton fairly easily, through constant elemental DPS, but since only 1/5th of your elemental damage actually counts, it's not as quick as the CB
