Insect glaive : kinsect explanation ?
The ingame tuto and the video online make a terrible job at explaning the kinsect "routine"

Is there, on this forum, someone with enough understanding and pedagogy to explain with short and clear sentences what you have to do, to get what, using which glaive skill, to use the kinsect the way it's intended ?

kinsect projetion, kinsect charge, kinsect collect... i don't get it at all.

Send help 'cause i don't manage to motivate myself to play this weapon.

Kinsects have limited Stamina, which will deplete over time. Recall your Kinsect to replenish some of its Stamina.

When your Kinsect hits a Monster, it will grab an "Extract". These will grant powerful effects, which are necessary for fully mastering the Insect Glaive. There are four extract types:

Red - Improved moveset that deals higher damage.
White - Increased movement speed (with your weapon drawn), jump height, and mid-air dodge distance. Also improves effects of other Extracts.
Orange - Resistance to knockbacks.
Green - Heals you.

White extract adds these effects as well:

White + Red - Increased damage dealt.
White + Orange - Drastic decrease in damage taken.
White + Orange + Red - Drastic increase in damage dealt, AND Drastic decrease in damage taken. Sometimes referred to as "Triple up" or "Triple buff".

When you gather your third Extract, it resets and synchronizes the duration of all three, but you cannot boost the duration further, so you have to wait until your Extract buffs run out before you can apply them again.

Your Kinsect has four stats:

Speed - Probably the most important for most players. Simply makes your Kinsect faster, which allows you to gather Extracts faster.

Power - Increases damage dealt by your Kinsect.

Heal - Increases Health gained from Green Extract, Kinsect Stamina regeneration speed (not the burst of stamina when first recalled though).

Element - Adds element damage to your Kinsect. No Kinsect has natural any Element stat, so you need to add that effect to your Kinsect from the smithy if you want it. Adding element costs different things depending on your chosen element, and will also reduce your Kinsect's Power stat by one. Note that Element scales on how much your Kinsect is upgraded, not on your Power stat, so if you have a Kinsect with low Power, you probably want to give it an Element. I will also note that Dragon Element Kinsects have low Elderseal. Also note that it improves effectiveness of Kinsect Powders, which will be covered shortly.

If you hit CTRL while aiming your Kinsect, you will shoot a small projectile. The will cause your Kinsect to automatically attack the Monster wherever the projectile hit until it is recalled, told to attack elsewhere, or it runs out of Stamina. This is called "Marking" the Monster. You can also Mark the Monster by pressing CTRL without aiming, which will cause you to do a low damage attack with the blunt end of your Insect Glaive, Marking the Monster whever the attack lands.

When your Kinsect automatically attack the Monster in this way, it will spawn a hovering "Powder" cloud in the air, which will burst when hit, and have a variety of effects depending on the type of Powder your Kinsect has. Most Powder types deal damage to nearby Monsters when burst.

Each Kinsect has a Powder type which has different effects depending on what kind of Powder it is.

There are four Powder types:

Poison - Applies minor Poison status buildup to any nearby Monsters.
Para - Applies minor Paralysis status buildup to any nearby Monsters.
Blast - Applies minor Blast status buildup to any nearby Monsters. Also deal increased damage compared to other Powder types.
Heal - Heals nearby Hunters. This powder will deal no damage to Monsters.

All of these Powders statuses are affected by the effective Element stat of your Kinsect. You do NOT need to have an Element on your Kinsect to makes the most of Pwders, it just scales the same way as the Element stat would.

Lastly, each Insect Glaive has a "Kinsect Bonus" that effects how your Kinsect plays. They are as follows:

Sever Boost - Drastically increases the Raw damage of Sever type Kinsects.

Blunt Boost - Increases the Raw damage of Blunt type Kinsects. (Slightly less than Sever Boost)

Element Boost - Massively increases the Element damage of your Kinsect.

Speed Boost - Massively increases the movement speed of your Kinsect. (Does not increase the Speed stat of your Kinsect. Rather, it multiplies how fast your Kinsect moves.)

Stamina Boost - Increases how much Stamina your Kinsect gets when you recall it, halves Kinsect Stamina drain, and doubles natural Kinsect Stamina regeneration.

Spirit & Strength boost - Gives your Kinsect both the Spirit and Strength boost when you feed your Kinsect, regardless of Slinger Ammo type used. (Iceborne only, Iceborne content covered later.)

That's all you need to know if you only have the base game. If you have Iceborne, there's a little more to cover.

If you have Slinger Ammo, you can feed it to your Kinsect to provide it with powerful buffs. There are two buff types:

Spirit - Granted from feeding your Kinsect Slinger Ammo gathered from the terrain. Double Kinsect max Stamina and Kinsect Stamina regeneration. Also increases how long Extract buffs last. (Including the Triple Buff.)

Strength - Granted from feeding your Kinsect Slinger Ammo gathered from Monsters.
Massively increases Kinsect Raw damage, increases Kinsect Element damage by an ungodly amount (3.5x), improves the effectiveness of Kinsect Powders, and increases the duration of single extracts. (NOT the Triple Buff)

Typically these buffs cannot be used together, as one will override the other, but with the aforementioned Spirit & Strength Boost Kinsect Bonus, you get to have both at the same time, regardless of Slinger Ammo used.

Lastly, Iceborne Adds one more feature regarding Kinsects, and that is the Descending Thrust.

Pressing CTRL midair causes you to release your Kinsect where you first inputted the command, and then thrust downwards, and follow up the thrust with a double roundslash that marks the Monster where you hit. The Kinsect will then follow up with a piercing attack towards where you marked, dealing damage several times as it passes through the Monster. This Kinsect follow-up will actually deal more damage if you have a lower Speed stat, as it takes more time for it to travel through the Monster.

That's it for the Kinsects, and probably all you'll need to know. I hope this long-winded comment helps you out a little. Happy hunting!

If you'd like to know the specific numbers, or perhaps learn a little more about the Kinsect, I made this guide to help people out. It covers absolutely every little detail and mechanic that you can know about the Kinsect, so if you're interested give it a look:

Basically you can send the kinsect to attack while you're distant from your prey, (if you're using a controller) using RT will do kinsect only commands (equivalant to using the slinger), projection will send a ball of stinky so the kinsect will attack on his own, charge will send the kinsect into a charging stance directly at where you sent him but he won't keep attacking if he hits the prey, and collect is to collect his juice early so you don't wait for his stamina to run out. Using RT + Y and B will make it use one of your sling ammunition if you have one to buff it, with more stamina if ammo is taken from nature, or damage if it's ammo loot from monster's wounds

thanks a lot. I managed to learn most of what you explained by fighting monsters and testing things, but one thing i'm not sure is how am i supposed to mastered which extract i'm going to get from which part of the monster and am i supposed to have access to every type of extract on every monster ?

An other thing is does the Kisect bonus is just constantly applied passively or do i need to do something to activate it ?

the kinsect applies its bonus when it runs out of stamina, BUT, you can recall it with the kinsect collect to apply the bonus sooner. Also from my experiments, hit the head with the kinsect extract damage bonus, tail is defense, legs for speed.

Every Large Monster will have every kind of extract (at least if my memory doesn't fail me), with the exception of Green Extract, which is only available from certain monsters. Small monsters will only ever have one, maybe two different kinds of extract. The Extracts you get are dependent on which part of the monster you hit, and which monster you're fighting. For most Monsters, you can get Red Extract from the head, White from the legs, arms, and wings, Orange from the main body, and Green from the tail. It's different for each Monster though, so you may have to do practical experimentation. If you want to look it up on the Fextra wiki for each monster, or on Kiranico (which is amazing for looking at monster stats all around, but I wouldn't recommend it unless you know about the inner working of the game.)

The Kinsect Bonus is always active, and you don't need to do anything to activate it.

Nope, Armour Skills are indifferent to Kinsects

Dont forget you also get passive Flinch free with orange buff.

Flinch free for IG now gives 3 points to earplugs wind resist and tremor resist when your kinsect triple buff is active.

Meaning if you add 2 points of earplugs and wind resist your build will have a weaker "lite" version of rocksteady mantle while powered up.

Talking about flinch free, i'm using Jump master to not being knock back during jump, but it doesn't seems to do anything sinc ei'm still constantly being sent flying while in the air. Do you know if the perk is bugged or something ?

It only prevent other hunters from knocking you down. It dont work on monsters. So basically a worthless talent. Then I would rather use empowered tenderize gem so you only have to tenderize once and it gives higher chance to drop pods you can use to feed your kinsect.

Also Power Prolonger is a great talent to have 3 lvls off from Alatreon Alpha gloves. It will increase the time your kinsect is powered up and the type of pod you feed it also decide how long it last.

This is my Hunter. Also regarding the Flinch Free gem. Its not something you want to go for cause you already got 1 passive talent from orange buff.
