Extra character slots via save backups?
Probably a stupid question, but am I right in assuming you could get a new set of characters by backing up the remote folder in steam\userdata\[steamID]\582010\remote and just swapping out different backups for different characters? It'd be helpful for modding purposes.

that is the correct steam cloud save folder yes, i do back it up from time to time, just in case of save data corruption.
no idea why you would need more than 2 save slots on this game though, aside from using the same armor set on female/male.

I just wanted to be safe and keep my vanilla characters separate from my modded ones just in case. This doesn't seem like a very mod-friendly game and in case I screw something up I don't want to lose my main characters.

depends what you are modding i guess but generally speaking it is completely safe.
afaik mods that change cosmetics can come and go with no impact and the same with mods that add quests.
Not sure how the game adds adding custom equipment and then removing it though, since i regularly play online I wont use these types of mods to give me an edge over everyone else.

custom equipment with new stats replaces existing equipment, so when uninstalled they revert to their "normal" state typically. but that's still within the realm of things you shouldn't bring into multiplayer at all and probably should be on its own character

Cosmetics, altered movesets, altered monsters, altered items and altered skills are all safe to unmod.
ADDED items, weapons, skills, etc are NOT safe to remove.

That's the rule of thumb.
