I'm curious to know how you've managed to acquire it, though. Maybe it has finally been activated via a recent patch?
You're talking about the purple / pink one, right? It has a reference at the Steamworks but you've never been able to obtain it. As far as I know, anyway. The white, orange and red versions are all found from associated rocks in the Grinding Lands, but also sometimes appear as rewards randomly from quests too.
I'm just going to assume it was added by an enterprising modder who maybe decided it'd be a fun reward to add to one of their custom mod quests, or something like that. Do you use mods, now or ever in the past? It may explain why you were able to obtain it once.
If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me - expanding my knowledge about this game is never a bad thing, after all.
Put on a geologist and start a loop gathering materials until that region level becomes red. Red level means it will yield rarer materials. To keep it red simply gather from each gathering point 3x instead of 4 (with geologist) making sure that the gatherpoint is not exhausted. You can keep that region's level red indefinitely (with rarer drops).
I CLEARLY remember it being Giant Dragonvein Coal. Where or when is extremely vague in my mind. Only ever got one and when I turned in fuel at the steamworks, it gave me 5000 fuel.
I just cannot remember where it was exactly. All I remember was that it was some quest, probably in Elder's Recess, monster ran off to another area, and before following it I decided to gather from a nearby mining node (cannot exactly recall which color it was but maybe a red one), character did the rare find animation and there it was. As I mentioned before it gave me 5000 fuel. It is irritating that I can't remember exact details. I am trying to test to see whether "Upsurge: Mining Nodes" has anything to do with it.
Yes I have been doing this with a gathering set.
Out of boredom I did go hunting for this elusive coal back then game first came out, and I did a lot of mining both inside the Grinding Lands and outside, since I had the impression that during seasonal festivals the Steamworks spat out decorations instead of the usual prizes (was half-right, it spits out tickets which you can redeem for random decorations, but yeah)
I never came across the giant coal, so that's why I'm curious about it.
You never used any mods that might have added it in for whatever reason?
Nope, no mods to add this thing. The only thing I ever mod is the handler's face and some clean skin/face textures. I think was trying to get Shadowcores through threat level 3 investigations. If that quest, by chance, had Upsurge: Mining Outcrops and I happened to get that, then that must some multilayered conditional a$$ BS if that is the way to obtain one lmao.
Well, it's unusual to say the least. Surely data miners would have figured out the exact methods to obtain it by now, though.
I am wondering if Capcom had it in earlier and patched it out later. Or maybe I had joined someone that had it modded in? Is that a possibility? I am fairly certain I joined an SOS.
custom quests have been a thing since the old monster hunter games, it is possible somebody made a quest that has those active
I really wish they wouldn't just leave it at an Arena Quest exclusive drop. Why did Fatalis have to be the last update?
Still, hoping that a patch might lead to Giant Dragonvein Coal being more easily attainable.
Pretty sure he was sarcastic seeing how this thread was a year old.
