There are also a few events with a guaranteed gold crown for instance:
the greatest jagras has a gold crown largest jagras and a gold crown smallest deviljho.
A rush of blood has a gold crown smallest odogaron.
The USJ quest has a gold crown largest and smallest jagras,
The other USJ has a gold crown smallest azure rath and i think a large dodogama.
There's lots of others as well so it might be worth looking online for a list.
I'll add in some Iceborne events that are currently running:
Seeing Is Believing - giant gold crown Tigrex in arena
Monkey Business - small gold crown Furious Rajang in Hoarfrost
Don't forget the Earplugs! - small gold crown Yian Garuga in arena
I remember clearly while in the process of cleaning up High Rank Assignments and Optionals, the only crown I ever saw was a Silver Crown Paolumu. The rest were just plain normal no notable sizes, etc.
It wasn't until I began doing Investigations, especially Tempered ones, that I began picking up crowns reliably. It feels like Investigations are your only real bet at finding crowns (outside of guaranteed ones from Event quests, or special Events with a higher variety of extreme sizes, of course)
Investigations have a bunch of different random statistics baked into them, and I know one of them is the potential monster size maximum / minimum. The higher it is on either end of the scale, the more likely you're going to find one that fufills the criteria of being Mini or Gold crown. I'm not sure if this scales with difficulty or simply the reward boxes, though.
I've done plenty of 5 Box 1 Silver 4 Gold, or 5 Purple boxes, in the pursuit of crowns and turned up empty handed, for example. Then you do some random 2 box SOS you joined out of boredom and bam, it's a Gold Crown. That's why I think it's less about the rewards / difficulty and just a random modifier you can't see on Investigations themselves, since they're randomly generated from random modifiers, etc.
It's also why when I'm crown hunting I grab as many Investigations as I can for any given monster, and then just go down through the list, rather than burning them all out one by one, etc.
Musical event quests are the best source for monsters featured in them. Keep in mind you don't have to finish the quest entirely, if you're just missing Beotodus from the Hoarfrost one, just whack Beo and return from the quest.
