Switch Axe Controls: Does Heavy Slam not work on all axes?

I'm trying to get a more complete understanding of the switch axe, and have been trying to watch videos, look at wikis and so forth to understand the various mechanics. Sadly, most of these are either purely for console play, and so have button icons or letters for what to press to bring about certain moves, or the individuals personal settings, like having Ctrl for switch (mine is on mouse 4).

One of the things I saw was there is a move you can use that goes from Wild Swing to a Heavy Slam move that charges your axe blade. The thing is... I can't seem to get it to work. I've tried every individual button press, along with every combo of buttons. I've tried swinging 3+ times before trying to get it to come out, all the way up to my stamina limit. Nothing.

According to the wikis and tutorials I've looked at, my body is supposed to flash pink to let me know I can do a Heavy Slam. The videos show the person doing them in the training area, which is where I'm practicing them. I'm using the Defender Switch Axe 2, and so now I'm wondering if it's a case of the level of the axe limiting certain moves.

Can anyone explain how to bring out a Heavy Slam using this weapon (if possible) in PC terms?

if i remember that move can only be use if you have iceborne dlc.

The heavy Axe Slam is a new move for the S.A in iceborne
You have to do the Wild Axe combo first by Pressing B with the Xbox for me, then wait for your Character to shine red then you can Do the Heavy Axe Slam by Pressing Y.
Sorry been playing MHW using a Controller since launch so i dont know any KB inputs

Ah, so the problem is me not owning Icebourne. That would explain it. Thanks for the info, guys.

It's been kinda hard getting the proper information since people on console are so far ahead of me in the game; everything I can find has been tailored towards those, and I've been having to muddle my way through.

One more question though.

Can you not charge the axe blade in base MHW? How would you do it?

You would charge it by doing the heavy slam so I guess you can't in base.
