Are the game save files/character files locally stored or server sided?

I am doing a hard reset on my computer and would like to know if the save files are local or not

There is a local set and cloud set. Save and quit. Look at steam and see if MHW is syncing. If it is, then it’s uploading a cloud save.

As someone else said already, both. The game stores saves locally and Steam syncs them to their cloud if you have it enabled. You should be backing up your local save once every few weeks or so as the cloud saving sometimes ****s up. You can find your local saves for MHW at driveyoudownloadedsteamto/steam/userdata/randomnumbers(?)/582010/remote. Copy and paste everything in the "remote" folder somewhere (or multiple different places if you want to be extra cautious) to make a backup of your MHW saves.
