The WIndows Taskmanager shows close to 0% GPU usage in DX12 games. This is not a MHW issue. You can check that with other DX12 games if you like.
Check the Usage with HWMonitor or similar tools.
turning dx12 off im using like 20% gpu usage now but surely thats still pretty low?

Oh yeha that is strange.
Here is a picture of what i was trying to say with my comment.

The taskmanager is at least on my system really strange when it comes to DX12 usage.

HWMonitor and Afterburner show clearly that MH uses my GPU fully.

But im also on of the ppl that dont have any issues. It runs between 80-100 FPS

Is your CPU on 100% then like others write on the forum?
Im just sad that capcom seems not be able to fix this... such a awesome game... so many problems...

That's perfectly normal.
Except if you're on the desktop and it's still using 100%, then you have problems. xD

i mean its pretty much the same at higher settings i just had it at low to see if it'd help performance but clearly not

Honestly sounds like you're running a system that's well within the written requirements and running with the base minimum settings, and assuming that all your graphic drivers are up to date the game's still not working. CPU 60% really surprised me lol, even my CPU is around 80% (though I'm on highest and running a Ryzen 3600). I'd say "upgrade your CPU" because it's old as hell if you're not reaching 30 fps on your system, but they legit have worse CPUs listed on minimum settings with less RAM and worse graphics card as well. You should be getting at least 30 frames on the preset Low settings without needing to change anything about your hardware.

I...guess...make sure the game is actually using your graphics card instead of any other integrated graphics? Idk, I don't think that's even a thing.

I get like 30-50 fps usually but sometimes it just dips into the 10s for no apparent reason

That's definitely an issue from the Iceborne update bugging out everyone's systems. Imo you should be able to play the game in 30 fps on Low or Medium, maybe a bit lower on High (but test that yourself). I'd recommend turning on the frame limit just because I hate when the game jumps from 30-50 fps -- my old system used to do that before I upgraded. I'm really assuming that the GPU usage is a bug (how are you viewing the GPU usage? Through the Windows 10 Game Bar or a 3rd party app?), either an incorrect number being displayed or the game itself just being silly. My 1070 gets 9% usage when running on the desktop with nothing else playing, your 1080ti should be at 5% only when nothing is pulling resources from it!

After the patch the game is much more stable fps for me. But CPU usage bounces between 80-100% constantly (i7 7700k) and I can drop down into the 40s of fps when I used to sit pretty in the 80s before iceborne.

I'm on dx12 right now so I know when it says on only using 3% of my GPU (GTX1070) I know it's wrong so I'll probably change back to dx11 when I get home from work to see how that works

Found the moron.

You have no idea how computers work and it shows.

im using msi afterburner on screen display to see my usage, i just played again for a little while on lowest and im having immense stuttering and staying in the low 20fps now. i dont know why its suddenly way worse but this games becoming near unplayable

mostly 0 gpu use with 100 to 98 cpu. think capcom is trying to render the whole game using cpu only

GPU should always be at 100%

If i have to guess your cpu choking because the new update. You can see only 60% usage in taskmanager because hyperthreading and the game only utilize your phisical cores not the ht ones.
