How does sleep coating work?
Does it just turn my arrows into tranq bombs?

Does this make it possible to trap monsters by using sleep coated arrows to knock them out instead of tranq bombs?

Can I stop carrying thunder traps and just use sleep coating once the monster is weakened to capture it?

Sleep coating makes your arrows apply sleep status. It has nothing to do with capturing a monster. You still need to trap it and hit it with 2 tranq bombs.

No, like Suzaku said they don't work like tranq bombs. They are good for making a monster sleep so you can get the a good wake up headshot onto it though, or so a friend with a big damage weapon can get a high damage hit, like the Greatsword final charge. Or even putting barrel bombs around its head.

Tranq and sleep are two different statues, yes, it's confusing

one way to think of it is sleep status and coatings, are a slow acting short duration tranq. its enough to render a monster unconcious but not enough to tie it to a caravan and haul it back to base. while tranq bombs and shot, are fast acting, long duration tranqs that require a monster become distressed via a trap to work properly.

you know, game logic.
