Just found this video, pretty sure that's what im hearing thought not 100% it's also happening randomly even when im not around them.. sometimes not even in combat.

Tested again with the video for reference, it's not the same.
One im hearing is deeper than Rathians in the video and Rathian did not roar while I was attacking (kept knocking it around and flinching it to make sure it couldn't)
I heard the deeper roar again shortly before Rathalos showed up so I think it is what you said it was but Rathalos has a different deeper roar than Rathian does and this one is signalling that Rathalos is coming to Rathians aid rather than Rathian calling for aid.
What's odd is that this has apparently been in the game for months and yet I have never heard it until now despite having fought Rathians and Rathalos's almost every time I've played the game.
Strange.
