also i suggest lance. a decent one can give you a good idea what things he does that do damage, and its a solid weapon for fighting him your first time or two till you get a feel for em.
His spines grow out as the battles goes on but they are not invincible. You just need to hit them quite a bit with weaker weapons or some times with a strong weapon to destroy them.
But once he grow them all out he will do a dive bomb and you should run left or right when trying to avoid it. After this he loses all of his extra spines on his body.
Been some time since I last played against him but I believe you can cut his tail. His main two horns can be broken as well. Might be able to damage some other body parts.
He doesn't do damage when he does nothing. He must have done an attack on you in order to damage. Much like any other monster in the game unless the monster has a passive damage aura.
But what you might need to focus on is getting better defense on your gear that you have. Farm up armor spheres to boost your armor.
The fundamentals of surviving Nergigante are pretty simple. Don't be too quick to stand back up when he knocks you down, make sure when his spikes have all turned black you are always ready to sheathe your weapon and run away from him to initiate a dive dodge, and also when his spikes have partially grown (white spikes) he is at his weakest and you can do some good damage on him - if you break the spikes before they turn black, you often cause a trip.
Consider using a Thunder weapon, also.
Oh and don't forget to bring a weapon with lightning damage, that help.
When he's almost entirely covered in black spikes just evade until he dives and looses them. Then hit him very hard
All his attacks can be dodged. You are just not used to his agressiveness.
His nest area is quite small unless he breaks the back wall. This can make it hard to dodge, so consider luring him back out in the larger area. I actually don't know if you can break the wall yourself, but I suspect you can.
What equipment are you using? There may be some easy optimization you can do.
i forged the highest defense rating i could with dragon defense with most beneficial skills i could get and upgraded some levels...
when hes near death one of his charges has a VERY big area it hits to the sides aswell, i tried to dodge it several times and it hit me no matter what....
weapon i ended up using a paralysis weapon
