How to tell if a friend is bad with a weapon?
So I often do hunts in a full party. And in that party, there is this one guy that uses the greatsword. I don't want to suggest that the greatsword is a bad weapon, because that thing hits like a train, but since we started doing tempered investigations, he's been carting a lot. and I mean A LOT. More often than not he'll use up every available cart before the monster even starts limping, and while he almost always gets the tail off assuming he hasn't lost us the hunt, I don't know if it justifies dying so quickly and so frequently. More often than not, I find myself going support HH just to keep him alive. He always tries to do his charge attack combo, but the monster consistently interrupts him.

He supposedly still does the most damage on our team though, so I don't know if carting like butter is common with GS users (I don't enjoy using it so I wouldn't know), or if he's doing something completely wrong. Any GS mains out there who can give me some advice to relay to him? HH is fun regardless but I can only bring so many healing items.

Asking in particular because he wants to join us for tempered Deviljho and I don't want him to be excluded. He is more than capable with other weapons, but he insists on using his Jagras Hacker.

Greatsword is safer because being at the monsters tail is inherently safer than in its face but it's not like you can consistently slap the pickles tail or face anyway.

Hammer is one of the worst weapons to use against pickle. And this is coming from someone who uses a lot of different weapons. Maybe I'm not the best hammer player, but the fight just seems like a natural bad matchup for hammer, considering how hard it is to hit Jho's head, consistently.

Jho is a bad matchup for any weapon that don't swing wide/ have aim capabilities. That's because his size means any move with his head bring it out of your weapon's reach. That and the fact he loves jumping around and causing tremors. IMO, insect glaive is the easiest against him, followed close by lance/gunlance.

Gsword only does more damage than hammer, if you consider True Gsword charges, but Hammer's DPS, like golf swing combos, or even the triple charge pound for KO damage on the face easily beat Gsword if Gsword can't consistently land True Gsword charge attacks. It's about as easy to land a triple charge pound to the face with hammer as it is a level 1 Gsword charge, and the triple charge pound does more damage. Even the 2 charge can hit of upwards of 150-200 damage (on a face), and it's the best hit and run attack hammer has. That's a little bit better than Gsword crit draw attack.

The only reason I'm bringing this up, is if you're one of those Gsword users who can't consistently land the True charge combo, then try your luck with hammer. I think you'll find that hammer is a little bit easier to DPS with. Gsword users and Hammer often overlap the same types of positioning in fights, so fights you learned with Gsword will most likely translate to hammer pretty well. For hammer, the best approach is to slip in level 2 charge up-swings on the monster's face, then get out, repeat, until you find a larger opening to land a golf swing combo, or triple charge pound for KO damage.
You don't need true charge slash to still do good damage. I solo'd tempered jho with great sword back on ps4, no real issues.
It's simple. Farm better armor, upgrade it so he doesn't 1 KO. Encourage him to watch a guide or if you just want a quick fix, tell him to use bash, don't be afraid of using the guard mechanic. Landing the 3rd Charge is well good enough. Greatsword doesn't make you the unstoppable badass you seem to be, in reality it's a weapon that makes you a sluggish glass cannon.

Thanks for the responses, it seems the consensus is just that he's not being smart with it.
Side question: how do you GS users handle Deviljho? I hate fighting him so I just turtle with a lance and poke his feet but he won't do that...
against a deviljho with GS you have to not be afraid to block from time to time, its not as effective as a lance guard but it still stops crippling damage.

making use of the enviroment, vines, beetles and such for jump attacks help on jho greatly. they arent in every zone though so some zones you'll have to resort to standard hit and run tactics still, just try to stay near allies if you do run on a jho, nothing is more annoying than chasing him around the room chasing you. it turns into an episode of scooby doo.
ask your friend to try this build. it does not have meta dps but at least its survivable for me.

When I was using GS in my 4 man being the only blademaster in the group, tails were off within like 3ish minutes, before the monster left it's starting zone anyway.
If your friend keeps carting he's bad. Simple as that.
I mean you don't have many excuses when you have a move that allows you to guard all damage at any moment while charging.
If you really want this friend to be in your group for tempered Jho with his Jagras Hacker (and why Jagras anyway? He's weak to dragon, Jho's GS would be better) you better prepare tons of traps and stuns to let him land any damage at all.
sounds like they need to master the art of shoulder bash cancelling into iframes

alternatively thry could stop with the always charging playstyle (by far the most knowledge intesive) and opt for much safer hit and run (crit draw quick sheathe), constant meat grinder (just chaining left click>right click in a circle around the monster) or dodge swirly spam (unsheathed dodge>right click>left click i think; for dodge>shoulderbash>sort of a windmill attack through the monster) playstyle; they dont omit charging ofcourse; but they dont require so much knowledge about the specific monsters movements for standard incapacitated fighting (relying only on charged slashes when the opportunity presents itself)

its why as a wiggly boi main i lookout for these type of ppl to support it even sometimes its kinda hurt to watch
Ask him to Hit’ n Run style, and learn to block, i’m GS user here 100hrs something on MHW and countless hours on MH4U/MHGen with GS 🤣

Damn man, you sucks with this weapon. If you can say that to him you guys are no real friends.
Also, there's no point on giving tips if he doesn't want to kwonledge and mostly because he probably will not see this topic either.

If he don't learn eventually it means he used to be carried from the rest of the party, if that's the case tell the HH to stop healing and come to combat. You guys will probably fail a lot of hunts this way but he'll learn eventually if he cares about the party.

No matter how much damage you're doing, if you're constantly carting then you're a hindrance to the team. So you either learn to survive while also doing decent damage, or you're out of here. That's just how Monster Hunter works.
download a damage meter mod so u can see how he fairs against ur damage and others in ur team ?

Install a dps meter and give the team an update. That's one way to maybe make him change his mind.

Most people use the Jagras hacker until the rocket powered version is an option.

That being said it sounds like he is in love with the idea of the greatsword without really considering the reality of the weapon (you have to be amazing to make it work).

If he carts like crazy on normal tempered monsters then it's going to be even worse for tempered deviljho.
