Tips on Deviljho?
So I've been playing Monster Hunter games for some time now. I never really had a good reason to git gud with Jhoseph so I mostly stayed away from him in 4U.

Now that I've encountered him for the first time in World I realised just how bad I am at fighting this dude and I want to fix that.

So do veterans have any useful advise for Jho? I'm sticking to the hammer this time around and I'm not the type of player to change the weapon type if I'm having a hard time so keep that in mind.

I like to keep my distance with Bow.

Which is all I can give you.

I dislike how his breath attack can reach about 150 degrees around him.
Or that his shoulder bash is a literal wall of muscle that reaches from head to tail.

So I tend to fight him on distance.

Jhoseph. I like that :D

I'd suggest, watch him like any other monster to learn his attacks.
And maybe get a lance or any other blocking weapon to be able to observe him more safely.
It is what I usually do with new monsters.

The breath attack was never a major issue for me. It's range is pretty bad so I can usually just roll away or to his side.

And the lance ... I mean I could but as I said I'm sticking to the hammer. It's an integral part of the challenge for me.

Try to take confidence by standing under him, it's like fighting a bigger anjanath. Avoid to use attacks that leave you defenseless when he's enraged because he likes to retaliate really often when you hit him in his belly/face.
He's the only monster so far that i don't wanna fight without an evade mantle or evade window 5...or a shield.

Hit him until he dies.

Best advise. Case closed.

fyi he's almost literally a bigger Anja. He has all of Anja's moves, animations and mechanics with only a couple new ones. So if you're bad at Jho you might want to start training on Anja first.

Anjanath has proven multiple times not to be a problem for me.

Jho on the other hand has massive area denial with his tail swipes and continuous bites from left to right.

Yeah I should probably try staying under his belly. Seems like a good idea.

It's a good idea, but if you do don't forget to equip flash pods because you expose yourself to his infamous stomp+bite+face crash guaranteeing a trip to camp 1..on the other hand his foot is very small and the attack very telegraphed...again long recovery attacks like roundslash (or in your case hammer) are your worst enemy.

Bring adamant seeds. You can bring a stack of 10, and are one of the most convenient ways to cure the defense down status. On that note, eat attack up meals instead of defense meals.

Also, while many monsters are more kind to learning how to butcher them at the same time as killing them? Devil is artificially awkward, so focus on killing him now. Cutting off his tail, etc, once you are comfortable dealing with them.

Gun Lance with zero guard skills has spoiled me for plain Jho to just getting lazy with poke+shell wearing him down between safe big attack windows.

His hitboxes are the ever annoying "Why are you ever so slightly too tall?" in many cases. I got him stuck in the natural broken tree nets for example and got to watch a 90 degree angle vertical stake "miss" his tail because they were still standing fully upright.

But KILLING them, straight up as your only goal, makes the mindset of fighting him a lot smoother. I carted twice my first fight against them because I was spoiled by busting horns or cutting tails on the first try from Black Diablo to Xeno etc. Because I was getting greedy trying to take his tail on my first fight with him "He's skull status, I should capture... but I could STILL cut off his tail-ouch, okay that was hubris allright"

(Since you like hammer, see if pit traps will give you a window to crush their skull more easiily)

Dual tempered bagels was more fun and interesting to fight than even regular Devil. Not because "LOL explosions are hardcore!". But because Bagels has a less awkward design and will spend plenty of time with their face and tail at kicking height.

Killing or capturing Devil meanwhile is kind of like fighting star wars kid if they gave him a real lightsaber. (the comparisons to Anja are underselling Anja's quality).

Even their killshot screens show how Devil is clearly just attention ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Wear immunity mantle. It's the single best equipment against him. It removes his one shot capability. That's not to say you'll be immune to getting combo'ed to death though.

normal and tempered for me I always do the same thing

1- use a weapon you know very well
2- give your self a fully upgraded armor
3- cook something that will give you (L armor ) or (L attack if you know the monster and can dodge very well ) - incase of tempered Devil don't forget about the food skill it's very useful
4- prepare yourself , so for me when I hunt T-elders and T-Devil I do the following
drink demondrug ,armorskill, use demon powder and admant seed
bring with you traps pitfall and shock pring some flashlight and nulberry
5- for the jewel and builds it depend on your play style & your weapon but in general sometimes I sacrifice some damage for the survivability (what's the point of ultra high damage and you die alot right?)
finally study the monster know his moves, his oneshot trick
and remember to take your time you are not speed running

I wish I could upvote this like a million time.

I admittedly have just assumed the debuff down would erase the defense food buff rather than simply supress it, which is why I've been sticking with the attack meals.

That said, even if it does not, the attack buff never leaves in the time you can't afford to back off to eat a seed or whatever to clear the debuff.

GS methods should apply. A) get higher def, max out - dragonresist or the dragon mantle. (Sos for help if you need to, but this is assuming you've won at least once).
I dunno if it applies to hammer but impact may work too.
I like to stay at the tail end, or go for the balls- between the legs, best spot. You still get hit but avoid a lot of the more troubling ones.

Now if you wanna go balls to the wall - Bring traps, tainted food (paralysis sleep, etc) bombs, traps, things to make more traps (all in the interest of more free hits, keep in mind tho they break out faster as it goes on and you wont be able to cap easily) A sleep weapon might work too. And augment for hp heal, at least one. Every hit hp coming back is a huge bonus.

Mega demondrug, mega armorskin - nourishing extract easily comes from kitties hunting in LR (1-2 a run) or do it yourself..

Divine gem, at least 1 - 15 percent off the top and it procs a lot.

Vaal defensive builds seem to be popular (look it up, for relish the moment stuff..its on the board here somewhere).

I'd recommend handicraft. Rocksteady covers hearing ..for the most part and you shoooould be good enough not to get owned outright if you've played since 4u. Not having to sharpen might save your bacon (altho unsure on hammers..maybe its the other way) anyway, you get the idea.

Did i mention performance enhancing drugs are a good thing?

Jokes aside, adamant seed too - cures defense down that jho causes (with dragonblight, mantle blocks it for a bit) altho i havent had too much problem with it on regular jho.

Or just SOS and get other people in to be a target for it while you wail on it - go gun, and nail it from a far with a cluster run (quite fun actually).
