Really out of all the monsters in this game this one is the only one that that I actually learned , and did it fast.
Almost every attack can be avoided just by positioning , and alot of them allow for counterattacks.
It hit even harder than fatalis.
Either cheese it or face it like a real hunter.
It just does a lot of damage. As an endgame fight, it was adapted to challenge fully-geared veteran players, and part of that is addressing some issues with fight balance: namely, the ability to infinitely restock healing items (short time limit punishes restocking) and the ability to carry and continually craft/consume large amounts of quick-acting full-HP restoring items (1-2 hit KOs on most builds are fast enough to catch badly timed and spaced heals despite the speed and spammability).
It's also worth noting that due to diminishing returns that much defense isn't particularly noteworthy in what it's doing for you. DB or more ice res would help much more.
Ideally, use Fatalis equipment and weapons, even for DB and Bow. Its new ice armor really makes element not do a lot of damage. Pre-Fatalis equipment should be fine though, just a little harder. Elderseal can be nice to temporarily seal its armor but not a necessity. AT Velk is more of a Spread matchup, but you can use Normal or Sticky if you want.
Best to learn its comboes. When it has ice armor(roars with ice on it), it has set patterns of attacks it does so you can easily predict what final attack it will do, and in turn, what counter you should be doing. The key to winning the fight is being able to maximize the little openings it has.
For example, jumping quick stab >> ice circles. You would anticpate ice circles to happen. A lot of its comboes are variations of its old moves.
If you've mastered, regular Velk, this should be a little easier of a fight. The same tips apply for AT Velk for the most part. Never overcommit, stay by the side of its head, be wary of icy fog, strafe around as much as you can. Always focus the head as its the weakspot and stagger spot of Velkhana. Keep it enraged for a 20% damage boost. Choose to not get hit as much as you can.
Imo AT Velkhana in par with Fatalis when it comes to insane damage..
Basically if it's calm, wall twice (don't forget to tenderize a part when it's on the ground)
When it's enraged, spam jump attack until you mount it.
Repeat until it dies.
With this play style you've got a lot of mobility to be both offensive and able to evade attacks and in case of emergencies you still got your shield.
Mind that the ultimate attack is unblockable so dive instead.
Well she is actually one of my favorite monsters to fight, and it comes from someone who love fighting her using great sword and hammer, which aren't fast weapon to begin with..
Besides using insect glaive, SnS, or dual blades against her would immediately insta-win for anyone..
