just wondering which to wear for end game as I am gathering a lot of decorations now I don't know which rarity 8 version of armor to get

depends on build, gamma armor is mostly pretty good but you'll mix and match with alpha and beta pieces

Depends on how full your decoration set is. Some alpha peices have skills you don't have the decos for yet, and that you would use in your build anyway, so might as well build that until u have more. Almost every beta price is the same value, slot for slot, as alpha, but are just more flexible.

There's no drachen gamma, so alpha.

There are a few where the beta is better than alpha (for example, it alpha has no slots, beta has 1slot, alpha has an extra 1slot skill, like fire resist), there's no point in making that alpha, when the beta has the open slot aaand..fire resist is one of the easiest ones to get in the game.

That said there are some different skills on the gamma. I keep hoping (this is personal opinion and superstition NOTHING REAL) - that we get a chance..or a quest in icebourne, to turn the 3 sets into an omega version for G rank..or whatever the new rank is.

Anyway, gamma is different, beta is more slots, alpha is more skills, beta is usually..usually more useful (basing on the AT videos i've been watching/setups). Depends on your weapon, and setup you want too (defensive, like health boost, evade extender, or offense - handicraft, weakness exploit..attack..etc etc).

Most BiS armor pieces are gamma or beta cause of slots and/or skills except drachen which is alpha only. There are a couple of alpha pieces that are better cause they have the same number of decoration slots as beta but with a lower tier deco slot. Most if not all event armor also only has 1 variant.

Weapons that require Ele Crit, like DB have the choice to take 3 pieces of teo gamma and 2 pieces of rathalos/starlord to achieve Masters touch with 7 crit eye, wex, 2-3 points for the element and crit element, if you need also awakening cause hidden element you can easily go for a charm and use one of the large gem slots to activate it.

Alpha is more skills, Beta is more slots, Gamma is a holy bastardization of the two, with the exception of Gamma Luna

Everyone pretty much answered, but it bears mentioning that sometimes it just varies from piece to piece. I'd personally suggest making Vaal Hazak's Beta and Gamma pieces if you can, as they happen to be some of my most used pieces across the largest range of weapons I run.

The choice between Alpha and Beta pieces often can come down to what decorations you have available, since it's not uncommon for a Beta piece to -become- identical to an Alpha piece by gemming in the skill point it lost in the extra slot it gained. Not always the case, but it's worth looking at when considering what armor pieces to create. As for Gamma.. well look at Luna's gamma helm for example. It completely obsoletes the wiggler helm, and this isn't unusual for Gamma pieces. They may not all be terribly useful to you, but they offer more all around value than other armor pieces generally do. You could do far worse than making a gamma set you like the sound of.

Luna Gamma as a whole is garbage tho, Alpha or Beta armor pieces are a million times better in every way

My Gunlance build uses Lunastra Beta armor for the skills it offers and the slots it has. I've unlocked full Lunastra Gamma, but would overall be a downgrade for me to try and replace my current armor with it.

...but why? Luna beta provides absolutely nothing gunlance needs.

have to agree, depending on the build your going for you might be using a mix of gamma and beta. i had one case i was using an alpha piece of something simply because i lacked the deco at the time. pretty much the only reason to use an alpha piece is you lack the deco.

And I pretty much agree. But at least the Alpha/Beta sets are pretty damn good.
