now here and hoping that we will get the 15th weapon in next games or more. which might break this stand still and bring some new ways/tactics to the table. some reforms needed for this mh taboo.
Would not think I would ever main lance.
I then moved back to Insect Glaive, and defeated Anjanath. I decided I liked the look of the armour (fashion = better armour!), so I used Heavy Bowgun again to grind Anjanath armour and it felt much more at home with a bigger and more sluggish monster.
Then I went to the Wildspire Waste (very un-chronological), and I had defeated Barroth with Insect Glaive, but then tried out the Hammer against it, and I enjoyed it, but I was used to Insect Glaive, so I used that mostly. I personally used Low Rank as a way to figure out what the different weapons feel like, so I had used many of them (except Long Sword!)
When I was assigned to fight Diablos, and I had used Gunlance to hunt it, and utterly abhorred the Gunlance.
Then I got to High Rank, and decided I wanted a bit more oomph for the tougher monsters, so I swapped back to Hammer until I had fought and defeated Deviljho, at which point I used his materials to make the Greatsword, and I loved it. I had used Greatsword until I completed the Iceborne story, at which point I took a hefty break, and upon returning I branched out to Bow, and promptly made a bow for each element, and made a pretty decent build for that point of Master Rank.
Then I moved onto Gunlance again, and loved it to bits. It just felt so good, and so fun as well. I had used it for more quests than any other weapon. I had used it from unlocking the Guiding Lands all the way to Silver Rathalos and Gold Rathian, and I made the Silver Rathalos gunlance.
After that I had taken another long break, from January 18(?) to April 2nd of this year, and I had moved onto Sword and Shield, and am still using it. It definitely is a lot of fun to use! I've got a Sword and Shield for every element except Dragon, and I am going to make a Dragon Sword and Shield next time I play.
4U: IG
MHG: Aerial SwAxe, Adept LBG, Striker SNS
MHW: LS, DB, LBG, GS, Lance, GL, SwAxe (ib), SNS (ib).
The others I seldom play, least is HH
MH2G, MHP3: LS
MHW: LS
IB: Decided to become a bow main
Now basically plays every weapon besides Swax and GL. I normally use specific weapon match ups for each monster but LS, Bow and LBG are the ones I'm comfortable with solo speed hunting everything.
Thing is, I was just stepping away from World's Adrift when this first dropped for reasons I can't recall since it wasn't in it's death spiral yet. Further, I was trying to apply logic in a game about hunting giant monsters that can get to the size of houses if not larger.
So of course I started with the Insect Glaive. Why? Because back then, I figured to myself, 'why grab one of the weapons with shields when these monsters outweigh my hunter who knows how many to one?' Hence why I got the one that lets me jump on command, over tail swipes I figured, with the added bonus of air dashes.
And though I slowly tried out the other weapons in turn, the iconic Great Sword and the Hammer springing to mind in particular, I kept coming back to the IG even after I beat Xeno'jiiva.
Then Behemoth dropped. Behemoth back then required actual party coordination dynamics and not just everyone using whatever they damn well pleased because they had Master Rank "UNLIMITED POWER" gear. As part of that coordination, it was recommended one player be a tank; something with a shield; and one player run support. So I started playing the Hunting Horn more often.
Then some more after that.
Eventually I started running all of the hunts using HH because I was finding it hilarious and nobody stopped me. Least of all the main storyline monsters of the Iceborne roster all the way to Fatalis.
Which leads to now. I still dabble with the Hammer infrequently because that is a fun weapon to bring out, and the Lance even more infrequently than that because there's something satisfying about executing a well-timed guard, but other then that I'm still deep in the Doots side even into Rise.
...still keep coming back to this game though.
Got tired of counters working once very 3 hits because of over trash monsters hitboxes.
I tried bow and played it when I entered expert rank. I had no idea of what I was doing and couldn't manage my stamina but spamming random shots was fun and eventually monsters died.
At this point I played LS and switched to bow when a monster was too hard.
I got bored with bow being unplayable because I didn't have a full stamina build and LS is just boring. So I tried other weapons starting with Charge Blade because sword and big shield looks great. I realized it was too complicated for no reason and when I understood how it worked I ended up only doing the same exact combo all hunt long and got bored when I found out how to cheese every monster with a single combo.
So then I tried the Switch Axe. It's really fun to play but way too static for my taste. The lack of mobility is what kills the fun with switch axe.
Since I've played a fair amount of hunts with GS back in Freedom Unite I gave it a try and had fun despite doing bad since I played the old school way which meant I didn't use tackle or the true great slash.
When I started master rank I started to play Hammer. And I say it to any LS fanboy. Hammer is the best weapon in the game. Not the highest DPS, not the highest damage per hit. Not the fastest nor the best control over monsters.
No, it's just the perfect balance between high damage per hit, control over monsters, mobility and pure fun.
I then played most of master rank with hammer.
When I reached Velkana (which was a cancer fight because of the ice laser of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that shoots through any terrain and even shields. ♥♥♥♥ you Velkana may you never come back in future games) I tried Lance.
And Lance is my second favorite weapon in the game.
Playing counter lance is boring, slow and just a semi-afk gameplay. No thrill, just boring cheese.
Nah, Lance is best played as a mad charger and jumping rider. Constantly duel monsters in a battle of charges with drifts and perfect angles to evade attacks from a few centimeters and counter in mid air with a lance strike until you ride the monster and throw it to the ground.
Lance has an insane control over monsters in Iceborn. It's ridiculous. When a good lance player is part of the group the monster basically can't play. It's constantly on the ground and fully soften for other hunters to apply their DPS or GS strikes.
I also gave bowguns a try. The light one is kind of fun but I couldn't get high dmg with it so I got bored. I only played it against master rank Val Hazak because ♥♥♥♥♥♥ hell it was litteraly cancer to die from heart attack because of bs gaz that contaminates the entire world map.
At some point before Alatreon release (a HUEG ♥♥♥♥ you to this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ as well) I got bored so I tried Sword and Shield. And it was the best surprise I had.
In Iceborn SnS is such a fun weapon. It's kind of a mix between LS and Lance. High mobility and riding potential as well as great DPS.
Easy to understand, a moveset that feels great to use and pure style. SnS is great.
I tried insect glaive a bit but managing the insect felt annoying to me so I gave up on this. Besides the aerial hitboxes of monsters are complete nonsense and the rides always get stolen by lances and SnS anyway.
Tried Dual Blades. Got bored when spamming the Levy weeb back scratcher appeared to be the meta or something. Also 80% of the time ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ joining hunts are LS and Dual Blades. Another reason to dislkike the weapon.
So now I play Bow with a good stamina+dragonpiercer build, Hammer because hammer is life, and Lance because the weapon has the highest mobility in the game as well as the best control.
Sometimes I use GS or Gunlance for specific monsters. Or even light bowgun.
But hammer, lance and bow are my fav in Iceborn.
But then, late into base game, I actually started playing with other people, and I tried the heavy bowgun....and it has been my main since xD
I really like the daka, but it's more about the control of the fight, I love switching between various status ammos, as well as being able to throw around heals.
While I love the safi burstcannon, my favorite is specifically the Magda gemitus Vulcan
Sticky 3, exhaust 1 and 2, paralysis 2, sleep 2, recovered ammo, posion 2 I can literally inflict any status I want, when I want, and I can't count the number of times I've been able to save teammates doing it :D
If this gun had wyvern heart.....I would never likely never use anything else xD
That being said, guns play and feel very different from each other, so it keeps the game fresh ;D
But the first weapon that got me hooked was Charge Blade.
Btw for me Gunlance is the middle finger response to monsters who annoy me.
Tired of certain monster? Gunlance is the answer, always works..
Tried LS
Hated it
Started playing hbg
Was rough but made it trough to nergi
Switche to Gs
It clicked
Hard.
Beaten nergi with iron 3 Gs and almost no build.
Kept at it.
Started IB
Started going back to hbg
Kept Gs to be sure
Got to endgame
Hbg got very handy due to how strong it is.
Then it happend
GL my beloved
Then I started using CB, SA and lance alot too
And now im switching between those all
Now I have almost 1.7 thousand hours on this game and own Rise and Generations Ultimate.
I started off with Heavy Bowgun because it was something I understood.
Used it for pretty much the entirety of LR, but got bored of it soon after and moved onto melee weapons since there was 11 of them.
Used the Lance because I wanted to be a bit more tanky to try and get a feel for all of the monsters' moves. Loved feeling invincible, but kind of boring with the lack of moves and damage.
Tried out and loved the Great Sword because of big damage and giant sword (and because I needed monster parts.) Plain and simple.
Heard about Charge Blade and spent about 2 days trying to understand the thing. Loved it's complexity and versatility.
Tried out either the Insect Glaive or Dual Blades after crafting the Rathalos armor set, I wanted to learn about elemental damage and all that. This is where I began to spiral into Monster Hunter Math hell.
Went back to Lance when I started fighting elder dragons.
Then I finally landed on the Sword and Shield, AKA, the best weapon in the game. It was everything I wanted: offence, defence, and support.
When Iceborne came out, I used the Long Sword for a bit, but quickly went back to Sword and Shield.
Used Great Sword whenever I learned a monster's moves to farm the monster quicker or break certain parts.
But I mainly used Sword and Shield for the entirety of Iceborne.
Safi'jiiva gave me a whole new endgame set for a majority of all of my weapons.
When the furious and the raging arrived, I used Heavy Bowgun again and a Light Bowgun for that sticky spam. I loved every second of it. Still use it now if I need to break some hard to reach/tough parts.
When Alatreon arrived, I switched to Insect Glaive since it was the only weapon I had with Ice element.
Then Fatalis finally came, and after almost 10 tries, I had finally defeated him with the power of the Sword and Shield. In fact, I've only defeated Fatalis with the Sword and Shield.
So in short:
HBG > L > GS > CB > IG/DB > L > SNS > LS > SNS + GS > HBG + LBG > IG > SNS
i had a bit of a midlife crisis in mh4u and went through a lot of different weapons. half my item box is full of random longswords and insect glaives, and last i played i was finding the GS super sexy (not just in gameplay.. man i love the gogma designs so much).
i also had a bunch of hammers, hunting horns, ranged weapons that i never touched beyond 2 quests (idk why i made them), like 4 lances and a gunlance, and even a single charge blade that i poked once and never again
in world i used the hammer because i knew it. in iceborne i picked up the longsword for funsies and accidentally became a main. I have basically no other weapons except these lol, though i did play a bit of HH and insect glaive on the side for some variety.
i hate the changes they made to SA and GS. They made them less simple. >:/
in rise i tried to main the IG, then i made a HH for spite-related reasons and realised it did more damage. and now i'm making a LS again because i know it'll do the most damage and yeah , just give me the braindead numbers again idc anymore
