Am I doing something wrong or am i just bad at the game
So i just got into Master rank, actually it's the first time in any monster hunter game that i've made it this far, and am very confused about something. So i kill viper kadachi and the two monsters before it pretty quickly, ~20-30 minutes, which with my late high rank gear seemed reasonable. Then i get to Barioth and oh boy it takes me 42 minutes to kill him, using a lightning weapon i might add, and I think okay i wasn't able to get in many hits as he was moving around that's why it took so long. Then i decide I want to fight MR Rathalos cause i want his armor to go with his Charge blade i'm working towards anyways. The fight takes nearly 50 minutes to complete, i can do high rank Rathalos solo in about 15 minutes.

So am I just missing something about master rank that is critical to actually completing quests solo in a decent amount of time, I'm trying to soften the parts btw, or am I just bad, or is it my gear, I'm using the beotodus set right now with the MR tobi kadachi charge blade btw. Any advice would be appreciated.

PS: I already have MR weapons and armor, as I said in my post. A couple of you apprarently don't read the whole thing.

The health pools of the monster are very inflated compared to lower ranks. A high rank Rathalos has about 6500 HP on average. The Master Rank one sits at about 21k on average in solo play. So that checks out time wise for you. It's not completely your fault.

You need to make master rank gear right away. Trying to go through in older high rank gear is just going to make it a pain.

The raw attack boost from HR to MR weapons is massive. Get you some new MR weapons ASAP.

Like i said i have the MR Tobi Kadachi Charge blade, as well as the Beo Charge blade, which are both Rarity 9, so I already have MR weapons. Guess i just gotta use the clutch claw more or get better MR weapons, or maybe the Charge Blade just isn't for me. Thanks for letting me know it's not just me being bad.

you need master rank gear

Yeah, you need to start building for affinity. Weakness Exploit, Critical Boost, Critical Eye, Agitator etc. Tenderize monster parts you attack frequently and try to wall bang at least twice each fight.

But don't forget defense skills...you won't be doing any damage while you're running back after being carted.

Master Rank monsters are very unfun at first... and in general.
Their health pool is absurdly high, and will continue to be until you get good Master Rank gear, so the easiest way to get through the early hunts is to focus a lot on stagger and part breaking.

You also absolutely need to use the clutch claw, it's not optional. The damage increase from the clutch claw is insane.

Yeah i am starting to get used to using the clutch claw, still don't know how to wall bang though, but the tenderizing is helping a ton. Did a couple hunts tonight with a friend and the monsters feel far more balanced for a party of people. Even with just one other person the fights start to take a reasonable amount of time.

Press B/Circle whenever you're on a monster's head and have ammo in your sling. Once the monster is facing a wall/pit/another monster, press the RT/R2 to fire off your slinger and send the monster stumbling forward.

You can't do it if they're enraged (red icon on minimap) and keep in mind doing so will enrage them as soon as they get up, so avoid it on monsters like Rajang.

weakening with clutch claw is huge, and just knowing best positioning for your weapon type plays alot into DPS. Even 20 minutes isnt good, while it can be understandable if you are just moving to MR. That more than likely means you are putting out really bad damage.

Honestly if you are seeing a huge difference with having someone there to fight with you, it either means there is some cooperation and someone is consistently attacking while the other baits, or they carried you really hard.

Are you just using a whole Beo set? It's not particularly good for Charge Blade. You should mix and match armour to get the skills you want.

For example here's a random set I threw together:

- Barroth Helm B+
- Jagras Mail A+
- Banbaro Vambraces B+
- Barroth Coil A+
- Kulu Greaves A+

which gives these skills:

- Guard 3
- Attack Boost 2
- Health Boost 2
- Critical Eye 2
- Agitator 2
- Evade Extender 1
- Item Prolonger 1
- Offensive Guard 1

Guard 3 (plus charging your shield) will let you block almost anything you meet so far. Learn how to counter after blocking too[mhchargeblade.net].

You could make do with Guard 1 and more offensive skills but I picked this example to be more balanced and very easy to farm. You probably have all the materials already unless you haven't done anything except main quests in MR.

With decorations, top up Attack Boost to 4 and Health Boost to 3 since they are value points, otherwise go for Weakness Exploit, Agitator, Offensive Guard, Partbreaker (to break Barioth's claws/wings or Ratholos wings/tail faster), Handicraft, or Thunder Attack if you're using the Tobi CB.

Don't bother stacking more Critical Eye or Critical Boost for now since you're not using a high raw damage CB.

Skills that affect charge like Focus, Power Prolonger, Capacity Boost are also useful.

And finally if you're still getting hit a lot, you can get Stun Resistance 3 or more Evade skills, or whatever elemental defense for the monster. But it shouldn't be necessary if you guard and use the appropriate Mantle for the fight.

On my 2nd play through Icebourne, all I needed was a good understanding of my weapon and early on I used Beo's and later Tigrex set for Earplugs. After a while, I replaced Earplugs with Steadfast and found being immune to Stun was as effective as being immune to Roars and it required less slots.

Of course, Flinching, Mounting, Trapping, and Tenderizing body parts is also a huge part of my arsenal as well.

Low Rank : about 5 minutes
High Rank : about 10 minutes
Master Rank : about 15-25 minutes

Those are average times for me after 900 hours of gameplay using pre end game weapons and armor. Thats also where I stopped progressing, I was not interested in Guiding Lands at all. And I didn't want to make the game too easy.
