Well, I have 505 hours played, and still don't have that achievement so.... not long.

Depends on how lucky you are actually

All monster from the base game who have crown sizes count for the achievement
those are counting :
Great Jagras, Pukei Pukei, Tobi Kadachi, Anjanath,
Rathalos, Azure Rathalos, Barroth, Jyuratodus,
Rathian, Pink Rathian, Diablos, Black Diablos,
Kulu Ya Ku, Great Girros, Radobaan, Uragaan,
Odogaron, Bazelgeuse, Dodogama, Lavasioth,
Vaal Hazak, Teostra, Kirin, Nergigante,
Kushala Daora, Legiana

Both dlc monster who have their own crown sizes but arent counting are
Lunastra, Deviljho

Fixed size Monster doesnt count for the achievement like
Zorah Magdaros, Xeno Jiva, Behemoth, Kulve Taroth, Leshen, Ancient Leshen

From my casual hunting before I took a month break about 2-3 months after MHW for PC first dropped, I had half the monsters in the list pmuch gold crowned/small crowned, after I came back for some event quests, spammed all the gold crown chance up quests to finish it up to, like, 4/5 of the list, and finished off finally a couple months ago after not hunting for gold/mini crowns for about a couple weeks. Basically, ignoring all my breaks, it took only maybe 600-800 hours of work?
Entirely based on RNG and luck. Jump into investigations, run up to and size up the monster if it looks small abandon and repeat. You can repeat this until you get a crown for all monsters.

I'm currently working on this achievement and only need Kirin and Vaal giant crowns. Although I'm taking a different approach and killing everything regardless if it's small or average.

Right now I think I've killed about 120 Vaal's and 80 Kirin without getting a crown. The most hunts I had to do was 127 Black Diablos.

Thx for the info :D
Another related question:
Can Gold Crown monsters appear anywhere? Like in Arena and Challenge battles too?

Nope, there are some event quests which boast a higher chance at crowns for specific monsters however normal story quests, optional, arena, and challenges cannot get giant crowns.

Your best chance to get a crown is from investigations where the size is randomised every time you start.

there are specific events for crowns, if u have enough gear to kill them fast I think it'll take 20h more or less.
wildspire bolero, rock n roll recess etc, the ones with 4 monsters

Takes quite a while tbh. It's generally easier when Gold Crown events are up so your best bet to getting them would be when Festivals are up, like the upcoming Autumn Festival.

yeah the event quests can net you 80-90% of the crowns needed for the achievement. the rest is all hunting elder dragons over and over again.

there was a trick to know what investigations to run to have a decent chance of crowns but i forgot what it was. like 1 silver 1 gold reward with the feint count modifying the odds or something like that.

nice that the Festival is in 3 days :D

Only counting the hours I spent on gold crown missions, I spent like, at least 80 hours on just those quest. Then for monsters not in those quests, well, at least another 50 hours dedicated to crowns. I’m not counting normal farm for materials. These 130 hours above are just for crowns. If you count the crowns I got in normal farming, I’d say, at least 300 hours.

I did it around 350 hours into the game. Most of which was done by investigations - they just turn up in both high rank and tempered missions. Other times, pay attention to event quest such as:

Deep Green Blues
Wildspire Bolero
Coral Waltz
Effluvial Opera
Rock N’ Roll Recess

These spawn gold crown at very high rate for both large and small.

An important skill for crown sniping is: you need to know roughly the size for large and small crown. This is mostly done by watching youtube videos. Video that shown how to measure the size of a monster against your character. If a monster does not satisfy the height requirement, just abandon the mission (if you can) and start the next one.

The monster that gave me the most trouble was Nergigante. I've killed 108+ before I ran into a large crown. Not to mention how many times I've abandon the investigation before I reached that point.

It depends on the used tools.
mods can reduce the amount of wasted time, it exists one which boosts the spawn ratio of small and big ones to 50% and another one which shows all parameter of monsters

without mods it takes way longer
on average you need around 50 hunts to get both crowns, but rng can ruin the whole process so you will end with 150+ hunts for certain monsters.

quests with guaranteed gold crowns

Great Jagras - Both - USJ Gold Star Treatment

Dodogama - Large - USJ Blazing Azure Stars!

Azure Rathalos - Small - USJ Blazing Azure Stars!

Kulu-Ya-Ku - Large - Egg Lovers United

Odogaron - Small - A Rush of Blood

I think the Deviljho in "The Greatest Jagras" is a Mini Gold Crown as well.

Deviljho wouldn't be needed, though, would it? 90% sure the achievement is only for monsters that were at release.
