There certainly were problems with those gimmicks and I'm sure it would've been improved if they keep going with them, like the Switch's JoyCon motion controls (improved Wii remotes) and New 3DS with more stable 3D.
Thankfully though most of these gimmicks are not mandatory.
From the technical standpoint, they were pretty great. I personally love the Kinnect for what it can do; however, it wasn't receiving a lot of support from developers. Just Dance games were always way funner with Kinnect than other ways.
I do hope they improve VR. It just feels like they give up on gimmicks so quickly nowadays.
