Hunting without a Palico.
Recently restarted my progress in MHW. I learned a bit and felt like I was ok with giving it another, better informed go. Not that I had any intention of quitting, this game is awesome, just getting a better understanding of the systems.

I kept seeing people say 'hunting without a palico hits differently' and I was like yeah, ok.

So I decide to try it upon restarting.

OH. MY. GOD.

I had not taken into account the amount of pressure the Palico takes off you just by being there and being another infinite distraction in specific instances. The Kulu Ya-ku, the second of the starter monsters, went from being a push over to serious contender when you have no one to pull it off you or provide a distraction for you to pop a potion or sharpen your blade.

Its like a whole new game and I'm loving it but I'm SERIOUSLY considering if I can keep this up going forward when I start to get into the heavy starters, like the Rathalos and maybe even Diablos later on.

They can be useful sometimes, like with the flashbug gadget against fast monsters. But damn, them taking the aggro pisses me off lol. It's a completely different game like you said, amazing.

I bet it reminds you of those hosts that run from one end of the arena to the other during Alatreon fight. =)

Oh, it's you. Yeah, it's actually hilarious when that happens, even more so when they get salty while i am giving them solid advice.

Oh, it's you.

I'm sure you misspelled Yu. How's it going, Ember?

And yes, at that point its less about saving the host from Alatreon, its more about saving the Host from himself.

Didn't misspell anything, it was a joke :mhwgood:

Feels good to not play alongside palicoes in this game kekw.

I played with my palico for low ranked with Switch axe but I didn't like it dragging the monster everywhere and when monsters would swap aggro from palico to me suddenly when I was stuck in a long winded animation (switch axe) so I ditch it and never regretted. just recently beat some tempered elders so playing without palico is perfectly possible just make sure to pack a lot of consumables to create openings, escape, or whatever. Smoke bombs and hiding in bushes become your best friend.

(to be clear to me playing without Palico isn't a challenge but a preference and what weapon you use. I just prefer KNOWING and playing with the monster aggro being consistent because switch axe compared to other weapons kinda suck maneuvering long distances when the Palico or other players decide to drag the monster away from me. I do kinda think being able to hunt without Palico helps at being a slightly better hunter though (knowing how to handle being aggro'd at all times is a good skill to have. and what consumables to help with that )

Actually it's for the better: while palico can help as distraction or if you need to sharpen your weapon, the trade off is worse, as being able to have the full aggro of the monster helps massively with aiming at certain parts (usually the head aside for certain exceptions), which really help any HH, hammer or GS users.

The only real deal for me with palico is the plunderer gardget: with that I was able to get rubies or mantles which is nothing to sneeze off, but hunts take a bit longer due to the monsters following the cat.

No palico and no mantles is the best possible experience in World.

I got rid of my palico ages ago, I find them more of a hindrance than useful, I want to control where I fight such as by a ledge or slope etc- so I want the aggro. If I fight ex-hemoth which I do quite a lot, then palico causes him to summon more meteors which can troll you. Like the only use I have for my palico honestly, is when I want more items from a boss with plunderblade otherwise he stays at camp lol.

This time around I'm definitely targeting specific pieces more and even with my flailing I see the difference in being able to pull the monster and set up more jump attacks, etc. and targeting specific areas.

I think I mainly hunted without palico in base post-game, like when I was going for my sub-1 minute runs on Nergigante.

In Iceborne I find the palicos too useful to give up, even considering the wonky monster AI they sometimes cause.

Remember the 1st scene when you reached astera and met your palico after the ship sink?

Remember your palico hugging you (not the deviljho beside you) after the narrow death escape? yeah....me neither.:steamsalty:

YES! This!
Palicos have awful ai and draw aggro away making it harder to predict what attack is coming next thus ruining skill progression :angrybunny:. Haven't used mine in like 2 years and will make sure to not use them in future games.
