Question for Lance users
Long story short Acid Glavenus was bullying me even tho i have guard +5 and guard up from some Uragaan armor, bust most his attacks were still doing some pretty good chip dmg, is he just that strong? do i gotta worry about that with future monsters? is there a point to the guard skill being that high if i still take dmg? Thank you~~

2 levels into Recovery Speed is enough to "recycle" red HP, especially adding with Immunizer drink and Vaal set is really nice to recover remaining chipped HP.
(assuming you have effluvial expert or keep shooting Torch Pod on ground)
Later there will be Guard Up decoration from granny melding so you can ditch Uragaan set.

Few monsters does have unblockable attack even with Guard Up, such as grab attack or reallybigsupernovaareaattack.

Guarding reduces damage taken by a percentage, so if your defense isn't up to snuff, you'll take some hefty chip damage. Also take into account that his tail strikes can leave behind acid to inflict further damage, as well as inflict defense down on you.

Later monsters aren't too tough, and it only gets easier once you can get those health augments back on your weapon to restore any health lost to chip damage.

oh yeah forget guard if i can keep healing the tick dmg while blocking, but is the guard up with uragaan useless then?

Guard up is only necessary if the monster you're fighting has an unblockable attack. Most don't. Simply use as needed.

Iceborne did something to Lance shields that made them much less effective than their base game counterparts.

Or rather, they did something to the MR monsters, giving them a lot more force behind their attacks than you'd probably expect even with Guard 5 and stuff. You can use Guard 5 in HR with a Lance and attacks will just make noise against your shield, but in MR you'll definitely find a lot more attacks doing higher chip damage and even knocking you back. There's also more "true unblockable" moves in Iceborne that not even Guard Up can block, but don't ask me to give you a list because I don't know just how many or which ones, lol.

Rajang comes to mind, as he can really pummel stunlock you with some of his attacks due to his aggressive unrelenting nature, which does a number on your stamina and health too - although using a Lance against Rajang is dubious at best, due to how he likes to react to clutch claw usage, but still.

As already mentioned, don't be afraid to invest in skills you don't typically think about. Don't gotta chase the damage + affinity meta, you can go for some comfort like using Vaal sets or just having Recovery Speed in your set, with Astera Jerky or whatever too. The most important thing is that you don't cart, rather than finishing a hunt 5 minutes faster.

As a former Lance user, I might advise you to pick up Charge Blade on the side. It does take some micro-management and has an initially intimidating appearance, but will give you extra mobility to actually dodge some attacks and a fully charged CB shield is just as strong in the defense department as a Lance shield. While Lance can tank practically everything in vanilla, that lack of mobility really comes back to bite you when most Iceborne enemies act like kangaroos that had pure cocaine injected into their bloodstream.

Heck just being able to dodge away to make some space to heal can be the difference in a fight. Lance is kinda stuck always pressuring with pokes since it has surprisingly good closing options but nearly zero escape options other than "lmao imma charge away now" which obviously isn't always a reliable method.

Don't forget to be wearing MASTER RANK ARMOR if doing MR quests. Even the highest defense HR gear is still worse than the lowest defense MR gear. If you're wearing HR Uragaan (And if you're having problems with MR Acidic Glavenus I suspect you haven't fought MR Uragaan), get yourself a set of Tigrex armor or something and you'll see your damage taken go down by a significant margin.

Capcom really developed a hatred for the Lance in Iceborne. Some monsters do immense chip damage even with Guard 5 (Rajang, for example) and there are some unblockable attacks even with Guard Up (Savage Jho's pin, Velkhana ice ground breath, etc.). Frostfang Barioth is seemingly designed specifically to annoy lancers. It has the worst DPS in the game, but against some monsters it arguably has the worst defence too.
uh... also i think acidic glavenus defense down debuff affects your chip damage?

not really man, it is the lance weakness after all. you just gotta learn to deal with it and while you will never be like a dual blade, you can work it out.

being in a group using lance never stop being a bit annoying tough
