And here I thought having limited whetstones, having to actually go out and gather to find hercudromes to craft with, and Rathalos refusing to hand over his plate, being stuck in place while consuming items, not to mention the hitboxes and generally more hardcore monsters in general was the extent of World being considered a casualised, watered down experience, lol.
Did this come back for Rise, or have they stuck with the new quality of life features going forward? Even though I've never played the other games, I wouldn't mind certain things returning to the roots myself, but I imagine most of Worlds player base would hate it.
Speaking of which, a friend has been encouraging me to play an older Monster Hunter game recently, and I'm torn between Freedom Unite or Generations Ultimate. I can handle "clunk" even if I'm used to Worlds many quality of life changes, but do you have a recommendation for one I should try?
I wouldn't do FU as a place to start with older games. Farthest back I'd suggest going would be Portable 3rd. I have a soft spot for FU as I got my start with the japanese version Portable 2nd G, but it has NOT aged well.
you should definitley go back and play monster hunter 3u or tri is good too. i dont know what these guys are talkng about when they say it was clunky. it was super easy to master the underwater controls. literally took me 5 minutes to be proficient. i had no trouble using my greatsword and my friend had no trouble using his gunlance. the monsters were super cool too. giant angler fish with metal spikes on its back, lagiacrus, basically a giant lightning crocodile, caedus, giant horned elder dragon, they had plesioth and more im forgetting.... ahh now i gotta dig out my 2ds and play monster hunter 3u again. ill warn you now its way harder than world tho. no mantles and no moving while using items and no auto craft when you pick stuff up in the wild.
Underwater combat definitely needs a rework before coming back, I loved it but I can see how trading speed for more directional movement was against people’s tastes. It opened up the door for far more variety in monster design both visually and combatively. If it comes back and combines with our current improvements on mobility then I will be thrilled to pieces.
Yeah that doesn't look fun.
I said it was bad. Because it is. It was a failure of a game mechanic which is why it has been gone since 3U.
3U was my first game but the swimming nearly made me put down the series.
Not hard at all but is awful. The Ceadus fight is just long not because its hard but again because of how bad swimming was. So much so that they gave it who sections where it didnt move so you could actually attack it.
The movement was janky, the fights dragged on and on. The difderence between fighting Lagicrus who started in are 3 and area 4 was massive. Simply because area 3 meant one less water area fight.

Dont get me wrong I to love the idea and the monsters that came with it.
But no it should never come back.
But some things should stay in older gen, while devs can move forward and design new mechanics instead.
And,you know,it would be way cheaper than:
reworking underwater combat, creating new maps, designing new monsters, designing fights for both underwater and ground.
And not to mention there will be another outburst of "Real Veterans",who will run their mouth on every forum, how dissapointing new underwater combat is,how it's not the same etc.
Happens literally every time.
