Monster Hunter: World

Monster Hunter: World

anyone else miss the underwater fights?
I dont get why so many people complained. it was so easy to master the underwater controls and i loved fighting lagiacrus. Being able to just dive in the water and fight plesioth was so much better than having to keep fishing him out too. i feel like a bunch of salty noobs just complained so much they took it out.

Y'all new world hunters have it easy.
Sounds like it. I've heard about the Skull armour piece that doubled the skills equipped in your torso slot, which made it useful. My friend was pretty annoyed that it was essentially so worthless in World, though.

And here I thought having limited whetstones, having to actually go out and gather to find hercudromes to craft with, and Rathalos refusing to hand over his plate, being stuck in place while consuming items, not to mention the hitboxes and generally more hardcore monsters in general was the extent of World being considered a casualised, watered down experience, lol.

Did this come back for Rise, or have they stuck with the new quality of life features going forward? Even though I've never played the other games, I wouldn't mind certain things returning to the roots myself, but I imagine most of Worlds player base would hate it.

Speaking of which, a friend has been encouraging me to play an older Monster Hunter game recently, and I'm torn between Freedom Unite or Generations Ultimate. I can handle "clunk" even if I'm used to Worlds many quality of life changes, but do you have a recommendation for one I should try?
Rise mostly stuck with world's quality of life changes and made more of its own. Most of them for the better. It's just lacking content. And the charm system is godawful.

I wouldn't do FU as a place to start with older games. Farthest back I'd suggest going would be Portable 3rd. I have a soft spot for FU as I got my start with the japanese version Portable 2nd G, but it has NOT aged well.

Can't miss what you've never had I guess, but I sure would have liked to experience them. I guess there's nothing stopping me from going back and playing...whatever game it was that had it in, though.

My friend tells me underwater combat was the only thing that redeemed the Lance, lol. You just flew around underwater like a gas powered harpoon doing big jousty thrusts, I'd imagine.

I'm scared of being underwater though, so unless it was bright and colourful coral reef stuff with glowing illuminated stuff at night, and not very deep below, I would have been sad about it anyway. Nothing like a leviathan Deviljho Shark or something suddenly swimming out of the dark void and one shotting you because you swam too deep or something.

Hey, would have been cool and a decent "excuse" for having two identical monsters in the roster though, like Yian Garuga and Scarred Yian Garuga, they could have had Namielle on land (easy, boring, slow) and then Namielle underwater (hardcore, fun, fast, deadly) - same monster, but new attacks, whole different fight, etc.

Man, I'd love to see just how lethal Namielle is in its natural environment.

Wait, it was seamless? I thought it was like a different map you loaded into, that was fully underwater. Didn't know you could just swap straight to underwater combat from land combat on the fly. That's cool.

I'd definitely be up for it just for that. Although you just know people would just dung bomb or whatever the monster out of the water instead of actually fighting it lol, just like they do in Hoarfrost Reach in that one area with the tremor ripples.

you should definitley go back and play monster hunter 3u or tri is good too. i dont know what these guys are talkng about when they say it was clunky. it was super easy to master the underwater controls. literally took me 5 minutes to be proficient. i had no trouble using my greatsword and my friend had no trouble using his gunlance. the monsters were super cool too. giant angler fish with metal spikes on its back, lagiacrus, basically a giant lightning crocodile, caedus, giant horned elder dragon, they had plesioth and more im forgetting.... ahh now i gotta dig out my 2ds and play monster hunter 3u again. ill warn you now its way harder than world tho. no mantles and no moving while using items and no auto craft when you pick stuff up in the wild.

if you have to choose those 2 generations has more monsters i think. i would really recommend playing 3 ultimate or tri if you can tho.
Or he could not play the ones with the godawful swimming.

No 100% crafting certain items
Underwater was one of my favorite things in the series thus far and I can’t wait for a reworked version to eventually come back. As someone who favors freedom of movement over speed, trading a little speed for omnidirectional movement was a trade I was more than willing to make. I love the aesthetics of aquatic environments and creatures designed around them, several of my favorite designs and fights in the series are primarily if not entirely underwater along with my favorite map heavily emphasizing it. Hammer, lance, sword and shield, longsword, switch axe, bow, and greatsword we’re all fun for me to use in those games. 3U did the impossible and made Plesioth fun. No more “oh he jumped in the water so now we just wait until he decides to come back out while dodging the water beams that will never hit.” No, he jumps in and I followed him in to continue the whoopin’ I was delivering.
Underwater combat definitely needs a rework before coming back, I loved it but I can see how trading speed for more directional movement was against people’s tastes. It opened up the door for far more variety in monster design both visually and combatively. If it comes back and combines with our current improvements on mobility then I will be thrilled to pieces.

I didn't say it was hard.

I said it was bad. Because it is. It was a failure of a game mechanic which is why it has been gone since 3U.
Nope Im with Seamus on this one.

3U was my first game but the swimming nearly made me put down the series.

Not hard at all but is awful. The Ceadus fight is just long not because its hard but again because of how bad swimming was. So much so that they gave it who sections where it didnt move so you could actually attack it.

The movement was janky, the fights dragged on and on. The difderence between fighting Lagicrus who started in are 3 and area 4 was massive. Simply because area 3 meant one less water area fight.

-----

Dont get me wrong I to love the idea and the monsters that came with it.

But no it should never come back.
Something like underwater combat with faster charging wirebugs, faster monsters and slower hunters(So you need to go crazy on wirebugs) would be nice to have,I ll admit.
But some things should stay in older gen, while devs can move forward and design new mechanics instead.
And,you know,it would be way cheaper than:
reworking underwater combat, creating new maps, designing new monsters, designing fights for both underwater and ground.

And not to mention there will be another outburst of "Real Veterans",who will run their mouth on every forum, how dissapointing new underwater combat is,how it's not the same etc.
Happens literally every time.
