If you want something more interesting when it comes to combat, then I recommend avoiding the ranged weapons. To me, they just feel so boring because all you do is shoot your best ammo type at their face until they die. Melee offers so much more in terms of player engagement, and you take less damage to boot.

For traps, you need to purchase trap tools at the stockpile vendor in town, and then craft shock/pitfall traps at the item bench. Shock traps take a trap tool and a thunderbug; pitfalls take a trap tool and a net (ivy+spider web).

Shock traps are quicker to deploy and hold the monster in place at their normal stance. Pitfall traps take longer to deploy and drop the monster into the ground a bit, making it easier to hit the head of taller monsters. Repeated use of a trap shortens how long the monster is held by them, but each trap has a separate resistance.

Elder dragons cannot be trapped at all. Certain monsters in Iceborne are resistant/immune to certain traps under certain conditions. When/where you choose to deploy them doesn't really matter.

As for environmental traps, use them when you can. Dropping hanging boulders/breakable pillars, opening up a deadly waterslide, trees covered in vines, setting off frogs of various statuses, and more can help contribute to a hunt.

Many thanks for your reply and i think i will prob switch to a melee just gotta figure the right one for me and was also wondering how do you capture a monster, from what i know of would you need to get it shocked with a trap or sleep then equip the net and something with a white bar around the mini map i also heard capturing it gives you more materials is this also true

They need to be close to death/limping, you can also check if they have a skull icon on the minimap, means they are capturable(If your research gauge is maxed). And you read correctly.

You see them in that state, make them get caught in a trap and use 2 tranq bombs or tranq ammo to capture them.

Like Suzaku said, this doesn't apply to elder dragons.

Try different melee weapons, some are fast and some are slow.
To capture, shock or pitfall trap, and 2 tranq bombs / tranq ammo. OR you can bomb it first then trap within the next 30 seconds, both works. Monster must be limping / skull (skull icon only appears if you maxed out scoutfly gauge in hunt)

For World, capturing gives more materials, yes (different from other MH games)

To capture a monster, you need to reduce its health below 25%, and then (in either order) hit it with 2 tranq bombs, and get it stuck in a player-made trap (environmental traps don't work). This ends the hunt sooner, reduces the return-to-town timer to 20 seconds, and gives you more rewards than carving. It can also unlock optional special arena quests.

You can tell a monster is ready for capture when it limps and away and tries to sleep in its nest, or when you see a skull icon coming off its face in the minimap. Another method is to watch for special slinger ammo that it drops, like thorn pods, bomb pods, piercing pods, etc. It drops these at 30%/20%/10% hp remaining, so when you see a second pod drop late in a fight, it's likely ready for capture. The only problem with the pod method is it doesn't work well for Jyuratodus or Xeno'Jiiva, as they drop pods throughout the fight, or if a player that owns Iceborne performs clutch claw weapon attacks with a light weapon as these also cause the monster to drop special pods.

If you haven't already, check out Arekkz Gaming's weapon guides on youtube. They tell you everything you need to know about a weapon, how it functions, every move, and some basic tips on how to use it properly.
