Why do people dislike certain weapon designs so much in World?
I really like a lot of the weapon design choices in World, and was shocked to find quite a few people disliked one of my favourites (Narg DB/Tomahawks). Can anyone actually give a serious explanation as to why they dislike a certain weapon design? (not just "it looks bad")

I actually want to understand the viewpoint

I don't know if it applies to specific ones but the weapon designs used to be more varied in the older games. Now a lot of weapons look the same with just a different looking decoration at the hilt of a weapon.
People hate the weapon designs because, in their opinion, it looks bad and because the weapon could have potentially looked much more unique instead of having the samey iron/bone weapon look World seems to love. This is especially true with Nargacuga dual blades, where in past games they had a unique and cool design that fans of the series were anticipating seeing in World. It's okay if you think the World iteration looks cool, but most people seem to value legacy/unique weapon designs.
In the base game especially a lot of weapons just used the basic bone or metal model with maybe a little decoration on it showing what monster it's from. Past games weapon designs were more fleshed out.
Original Narga DB looks dank af, the tomahawk version we got in IB is just the old Tzi Tzi tomahawks but with new feathers on. It's lazy and foul.

The palico gets the giant shuriken Narga weapon instead. The hell Capcom?
as others said, weapon designs in past games were way more varied and unique. the majority of the weapons in World all use the same base with some extra detail, and for some weapons not even that.
not to mention a few of the actual unique designs just look bad too lol

Yeah this all makes sense, I guess it lacks the reflection of the monsters they are supposed to represent. For all intents and purposes I do like the base+plus deco system for late game layered customisation... it feels like a bit more freedom

It's mostly the ones that just look like the default Bone or Ore variant with a few pieces of whatever monster tacked onto it that people dislike.

I think the biggest blow is the Glavenus / Acid Glavenus Greatsword, that one put my Greatsword main friend straight into a crippling depression, lol - while Iceborne was being teased, they put up a screenshot of a player holding the Glavenus Greatsword and it was literally just your standard bone weapon with a piece of coloured scales to the haft, he coped by telling himself it wasn't the final version end of tree weapon and just an early game one lol. Poor guy.

Also they're all kinda...uninspired from the older games a little. My friend told me happily about Deviljho weapons being wrapped in chains and you could hear the chains rattling but then in World you can barely hear it (if at all) which kinda annoyed him, lol. Also hearing about stuff like Chameleos weapons slowly turning invisible as your power level increases with them I.E when you get up to level three spirit gauge with a Chameleos Longsword the entire blade turns invisible etc, that kind of stuff is really missing in this game.

Very few weapons do something cool, even the Hunting Horns are largely the same with a few (very few) exceptions, a lot of them just play the default instruments like the Didgeridoo and Bagpipes etc.

I can understand the annoyance, and we got Weapon Layering so late as well - all the cool unique designs being locked to dreadfully awful weapons for basically all of this games lifespan, not cool.

Yeah it would have been nice to have both options. I personally like tomahawks as a base, so I like being able to change the skin to fit my layered build... but yeah, it's sad we don't get the unique weapons.

Ah, yeah so MHW was not my first MH game, and I only started MHW after Iceborne, so maybe that has affected my view. Without layering it would have been painful for sure

I know you're not asking me but I just wanna say the Daora Greatsword looks like trash!
The only weapon design I can remember hating was the Diablos dual blades because they are actually clubs.

What the hell is a blunt weapon as small as a dual blade going to do to something like a Nergigante?

for several of the returning monsters you can see why on your palico. one example being the glavenus great sword. you can compare the sword your palico gets which is the original vs the basic bone weapon + monster decoration the player gets. for the palico you get the glavenus tail with a handle attached for your weapon. for the player you get a bone sword with some glavenus skin on the hilt, or feather, or fur and so on. you might find one or two keepers of the bunch but many unique designs were lost in exchange for this swap able parts weapon design

it feels out of place for the games progression as well. for the unique weapons, things make sense you get parts from a tougher monster to make stronger gear, but with the metal / bone + monster part design the monster parts dont serve a purpose in the design they only serve as decorations for the basic weapons you start the game with unless gluing monster parts to pieces of metal is supposed to make it stronger now as these new designs suggest.

Nami bow looks kind of strange to me. When drawn it doesn't look terrible, but it looks like a LBG or something on the back and is awkwardly positioned. It draws attention away from my hunter and onto the weapon in a bad way.

There's one hundred and sixty three pressure points in Nergigantes body, from tail tip to chin, and everything in between - thirty six of which are in his groin!

Using precise application of jutsu techniques we bash all of these pressure points in order to inflict maximum pain and suffering with minimal physical damage, something that cannot be achieved with mere blades.
