What's with the tiny chat box?
Can someone please tell me why the devs had the bright idea of only allowing 40 characters in a single chat message? It's enough to cut off short sentences so you have to send multiple messages to finish what you're trying to say. It's really dumb, and I'm surprised they haven't changed it yet. Is there any specific reason for this?

I mainly use chat when I try to advise people to avoid defender weapons/guardian armour if they're already using it, just because it's meant for speedrunners and not legit play. But it's annoying when I have to split up what could be a single message into 3 or 4 separate ones. I was surprised by GTA Online's somewhat small chat box when I first started playing that, but this is just ridiculous.

In a hunt unless everyone is at the camp or Gathering Hall, there isn't much time to chat in a middle of a hunt. The chat is mainly for basic shout outs and even then, a lot of shout outs are replaced with Stickers.

^Pretty much this, stickies and the shoutouts do the job.
Also chat is usually used to rage at other players, I've never seen anyone used it for good.
Whenever I play online games I immediately search on how to turn it off.

Unsolicited advice is rarely welcomed by anyone. The defender stuff is a legit way of playing the game, that person has the right to pick whatever they want to use.
it is very annoying, especially if you're the only one in your friend group who doesn't have a mic. I usually tend to just alt-tab out to steam message window instead but none of my friends are gonna read that so lol what the hell.

something else really minor but annoying is that, because i type on keyboard, but play game on controller, i tend to also close the chat window (or the menu or whatever, don't remember) with the controller too (especially when im in a rush).. but the game also counts that one button press as an actual attack for some reason... meaning after i stop chatting i have to sit and wait for the animation of the accidental attack to end.... man... (i have started to put away my weapon before sending a message now instead, but sometimes i forget anyway)

You're better off playing windows borderless and alt-tabbing into discord to talk to a group.

it is a leftover from the console history of the series as everything was so limited and they never changed it, yes it is annoying

It's also probably because it is enough for Japanese.

See how much characters you need to express this four kanji compound: 風林火山 (this would use 4 characters on the screen) = as fast as the wind, as quiet as the forest, as daring as fire and immovable as the mountain. That is a lot more characters in English :P

Yeah they should've increased the limit for other languages. I doubt this will improve in Monster Hunter Rise.

Achthualhy, that's 12 characters, not 4, because of how text encoding works. But the point stands regardless. Also, it's just symbol of furinkazan and it's literally 4 words (wind, forest, fire, mountain), not a whole sentence as described. It does carry whole sentence meaning because of history.
I was also surprised how bad chat is and how inexcusable whole system is, despite game using steam for p2p connections. Might have as well used steam chat API for it too if they went through trouble of making changes needed to work with steam server API in the first place.

So thats where all those donkeys in coop games come from.
The guys that ignore any kind of communication with their team , fail the quest by doing something stupid , ignoring the team , or annoying everyone by doing something others wanted to avoid.
And then they get mad and wonder why they were kicked.

I think it's one of those things that devs just didn't want to change, maybe they thought it was not a big deal... It's kinda annoying when you're at the lobby trying to talk to other players and you can't even finish your sentences without breaking it in 2-3...

Case in point, nothing but anger in that comment.

I should have been more clearer about it taking space on the screen, not how it is encoded :P I could check how many kanji you are allowed to have on the screen vs hiragana in the text box in this game and previous games tomorrow or something, just to check what limit Capcom uses.

Well it's an expression, so if you would say that to a Japanese person they would interpret the meaning behind it and not like if you said those individually (kaze, mori, hi, yama).

Well anyway that is just minor details.
