Using Defender weapons after main quest, before Iceborne
What is your opinion on using Defender weapons after finishing main quest?

For SnS (and I'm sure most of the weapons) Defender V is simply best weapon (outside missions requiring seal).

Looks like it has same base damage as Fatal Bite I've been using, but without element and with better sharpness (~2.5x white sharpness with my level of Handicraft) and no crit penalty.

And I know I should just enter Iceborne and get far better weapons already, but I'm stubborn and I want to finish all optional missions + deliveries + some events etc. beforehand.

Defender works great at the end of the main game. Nothing wrong with cleaning up all the optionals, as some of them offer items that are still beneficial throughout IB, like fertilizers, canteen ingredients, and mantles.
You can finish IB main quest with defender weapons if you want, i've seen people do it
Even starter IB weapons are weaker than Defender. So yeah, it's optimal to stick with it for post-base-game grind.
I even used defender weapon against golden rathian around mr70 because stupid health augment was locked behind mr100 for many weapons

Dropping health augment was the hardest thing to do during IB for me.
I was able to use my Defender SA up until I got to Glavenus in Iceborne, at which point, I wasn't able to deal enough damage to finish the quest in time. At which point, I changed up my weapon and then I was able to win. I think it should be fine to clean up the basegame content.

However, you may want a firepower boost after running into Behemoth, even moreso for Extreme Behemoth. Those guys require either legendary coordination or Iceborne-level firepower to beat. Same for Ancient Leshen, but Behemoth at least gives relevant gear in the form of the Dragon Soul, while Ancient Leshen is pretty much left in the dust.

Saaaaaaaaame. But for my 2nd character, she seems to have done fine
I of course intend to replace my current gear as soon as I start Iceborne, my question is mainly whether Defender weapons aren't overpowered.

I think I'll just stick with them now though, since I can't get any more upgrades over Jho weapon afaik.
Defender gear reeeeeeeee!!!

Do whatever you want, it's your game.

Well, I want to have experience as close as possible to vanilla MHW with updates.
Making my own custom sets and gearing up was pretty fun, even if it's meaningless in long run.

The way I personally treat defender armor is as follows:
During main story: avoid like the plague .
Post-main story: Do what you will. After not using it for the main story, you've likely picked up enough skill as a hunter to contribute positively to the hunt.

My main problem with Defender armor is how newbies get it when they shouldn't. It helps with speeding through the main story content, but it ends up creating tons of bad habits that become quite problematic to break.

I think the defender gear is a good way to experiment with different weapon types without committing super hard core to grinding to get one. Ultimately play however you like, but it's great for trying out different weapons.
i mean before i went into IB i made the defender CB to use because i didn't have a single good fire one ready to go, figured, blast should be sufficient till i can get a better one made. it was my raw option till about midway through unlocking the weapon tree for MR, ended up changing out for a Brachy CB because, why not MORE blast? then that went to lightbreak and finally fatalis all the while getting any decent elemental CB made along side that.

Yeah I just ignored Guardian armor completely, early game it's broken, but late game it's mediocre at best (2 slots? Marathon Runner as not bow/db? No thx).

It's weapons that are best in slot and about which I was concerned about.
