How hard is it to go back to old games?
Mhw brought a bunch of quality of life changes. How hard is it to play some of the earlier games once you get used to the qol changes? I bought a wii u specifically so I could play mh3u

If you already bought a WiiU, why not just try it out yourself? I think the biggest things I miss when playing older games is the fast gathering of herbs and honey, the lack of a materials section of your item bag, and faster consumable animations. I don't personally really feel like combat suffers that much going back, but that's much more subjective.

I remember MH3U had a demo, don’t know if it is still available. I know MHGU still has a demo if you own a switch.

I can't really speak much, since mhw is my first mh and have only watched some gameplay from older titles.
But boy...I sure glad it doesn't have any loading screen when transitioning between area.

you don't have as much directional maneuvering once you start attack animations with weapons. Also, bug nets and pickaxes are consumable. Whetstones are also consumable, with different rarities restoring different amount of sharpness. Using items also roots you in place, so starting the item use animation while thinking you can walk out of the monsters charge path will get you hit often.

There is no separate inventories for items and materials in the field, so monster carves and collecting minerals will fill it up quickly, but it is generally larger.

IIRC you have to have 'key items' in your inventory when you go to craft some items or you'll have a chance to fail the craft.

damage numbers made it easier to understand the damage output of your weapons and if you were actually hitting weakpoints or not.

Many qol changes were with item organization and management, and not many people enjoyed going away form it at first.

whoa there are different rarities of whetstones? never knew they did that. all i have played other than this is PS2 Original Monster hunter and Freedom Unite.. never wanted to get more than 1 console. it was tough finding the PS2 original on launch day.. nobody seemed to even care the game existed and stores only received like 2 copies. was the same with Demon's Souls lol

The biggest differences I'd say:

- Your character flexes after consuming just about anything. You need to look for openings to heal yourself. Slightly comparable to Dark Souls.

- You'll probably run out of heals faster and you can't just go refill them at your base. When I'd fail a quest it was because I ran out of heals, not because I got random combo'ed.

- Whetstones are quite annoying, you can carry 20 (?) of them, and they have a random chance to break on use. So you constantly need to rebuy them. Slightly inconvenient

- Pickaxes and Bug Nets can also break. You'll probably need to go out on expeditions just to get ores and bugs.

- Unlike in MHW, the RNG fest lies with the charms instead of the decorations. IMO that's a better system.

- Armour skills are harder to match up and when you have a full set you'll likely have one negative skill (which you can easily remove via one decoration)

- Rare drops are actually rare

- Loading screens between areas. For the most part ok, but no loading screens is obv. better.

- Weapon designs don't suck.

- Bow works differently and I think bow used to be more fun than in MHW

- Dodging is harder. Some hitboxes are garbage though (legendary Plesioth bodycheck with the hitbox the size of galaxies)

- NO UNSKIPABLE CUTSCENES

- The story is still garbage for the most part, but it isn't a cringefest and you aren't forced into eternal cutscenes with bad cinematography and cringy dialogue (oh god I despise MHW story)

- MH3 and MH3U have underwater battles

biggest difference is that you have to try to heal instead of cheesing everything with health augment or spamming max potions.
as a result the endgame isn't made of one shot spams because they aren't necessary.

Ohhhhh baby MH3U does NOT hold up very well if you’re coming hot off of MHW. Granted you should be generally fine, but the movement and combat in general will feel so dated. The combat doubly so if you happen to be using a weapon like the lance which got a toooon of QOL improvements over the games. Also good luck making high level weapons and armor, the amount of rare materials will put a stop to any experimenting you might want to do. So be sure to do a bit of research into what weapon to go for.
I think the 3rd gen still used paintballs to mark monsters on the map IIRC.

World was the first to stop using paintballs. MH4U and MHG still used them.

Good luck trying to play the clunky old games, also get ready to get hit without actually getting hit as the hitboxes are terrible and one of the reasons why people believe the old games were harder.
Nudelauflauf Nov 26, 2020 @ 10:23am
The old one is not harder, it just memorable. Had you tried it now, you might not loved it. But all the ideas, features, monsters and everything we love today, it was from there.
But the only one thing that I missed and sadly missing today are about the restock and changing gear in the middle of the hunt (not guiding land). It really kick the moral and lesson about "Hunting". Preparation, Nutrition, and Gear selection is not the main factor to be getting carted by the felyne anymore.

it can be tough to adapt, World has a lot of streamlining on certain game aspects that simply make things easier to do, like tracking, item manegement, gear swapping in a hunt, etc.

wonky hitboxes were also a thing, add like a foot and a half to every attack. symptom of smaller game models with lower resolutions.
Velkhana's Summer Nov 26, 2020 @ 11:40am
For certain types of quests, annoying. For actually hunting and the main meat of the game, I could go back to arts and styles any second of the day over world and not regret it. Being able to take one weapon and actually have different ways to play it beats world's graphics.

Well, it looks like Fatalis killed another player. RIP.

Btw you should have bought a 3ds instead, not only it has mh3u but it also has mh4u and mhgen and both games still have an active player base
