The forge tab is only for crafting the very first item in the tree. To upgrade an existing weapon, you need to go to the Upgrade tab, and click on the weapon you want to upgrade. If this doesn't solve it, post some screenshots so it's easier for me to understand your problem.

One is a switch axe, the other is a charge blade. 2 different weapons.

Are you trolling or what? The tree with the Rathian option is for Chargeblade, not Switchaxe.

You're confusing the Switch Axe and the Charge Blade. They're 2 completely different weapon classes with their own upgrade trees.

The Switch Axe does not have a Rathian branch until you reach Iceborne,

This is a Charge Blade AND you're trying to upgrade on the BONE tree:

This is Switch Axe ore tree:

Follow the glowing blue line to know which tree you're trying to upgrade.

Happens to all of us. Maybe one day we'll see a switch blade or charge axe.

Its not entirely your fault. The original names for the Charge Blade and Switch Axe in Japanese are "Charge Axe" and "Slash Axe" spelt in Katakana. Those names were changed to Charge Blade and Switch Axe respectively when they were localized.

The problem is that there are some names within the Charge Blade trees that still references its original class name, Charge Axe. That's why you see some Charge Blades with the word "Axe" in its name.

One good thing though is that you dont realy run out of materials for crafting weapons, everything can be farmed, even if it sometimes suck to spend a few hours killing monsters you have already done a lot of times.

So dont worry too much if you end up upgrading the "wrong" weapon. Can always try it out for a bit and sell it if you dont like the playstyle.

Switch Axe was my first weapon as well, learning it took a bit but its still fun for me.
If you want a poison based switch axe there is one in the iron tree i believe, probably need Pukei-pukei parts.

Actually, in early game, if you accidentally craft something you don't want, you can revert the upgrade and your mats will be refunded, just not the money. You will be given a warning if you're about to craft/upgrade something irreversible.
