You're confusing the Switch Axe and the Charge Blade. They're 2 completely different weapon classes with their own upgrade trees.
The Switch Axe does not have a Rathian branch until you reach Iceborne,

This is Switch Axe ore tree:

Follow the glowing blue line to know which tree you're trying to upgrade.
Its not entirely your fault. The original names for the Charge Blade and Switch Axe in Japanese are "Charge Axe" and "Slash Axe" spelt in Katakana. Those names were changed to Charge Blade and Switch Axe respectively when they were localized.
The problem is that there are some names within the Charge Blade trees that still references its original class name, Charge Axe. That's why you see some Charge Blades with the word "Axe" in its name.
So dont worry too much if you end up upgrading the "wrong" weapon. Can always try it out for a bit and sell it if you dont like the playstyle.
Switch Axe was my first weapon as well, learning it took a bit but its still fun for me.
If you want a poison based switch axe there is one in the iron tree i believe, probably need Pukei-pukei parts.
