Ok, how does the monster research work?
How can I tell during quests/expeditions how far the research is? Early game it's easy. If you find a monster footprint or whatever you see a bar pop up that fills up. If it fills completely you level up your knowledge of the monster (and have to return to the researcher I believe to start the next one). But this basically stops after level 3 or so. I'm planning to buy Iceborne in a few weeks and now I have determined to reach level 4/6 knowledge for all monsters. But I can't figure it out. I just went after anjanath because he was low level 4. So I ran around the forest (high rank) picking up a lot of anjanath stuff and some others. So after a while (and those yellow bars on the map screen being completely filled) I decide to return and go to the researcher. Turns out I gained about a third of a level in knowledge. Do I actually have to fight these monsters as well? I was under the impression just finding their tracks was enough.

Finding their tracks is enough I'm pretty sure. You get research progress breaking their parts and capturing them as well I think. There is a charm and a decoration I think to speed how fast your research progress increases too.

It makes sense I guess that breaking parts contributes. The ones that I do have maxed out are the few monsters I hunted a lot for parts.

The bar you see filling is the level of your Scoutflies, not your research bar. Your Scoutflies' starting level and speed of levelling is determined by your Research level and affects what you're shown when you track the monster.

Every hunt, assuming your monster research is maxed, you need to pick up at least ONE track in order to gain all the information afforded to you by your research level - including the skull pop-up.

You have seperate levels for the monsters themselves, like their weaknesses or loot. It fills up with killing it, trapping it and basically anything involving the monster
Another for the scoutflies, it increases by finding tracks and go from showing you the next track up to immediately where the monster is chillin as soon as you enter the map.

it is around 600 points for one level
scholar skill reduces it to something around 500 points

3 option to get the skill, surveyor's charm, hr brigade boots or hr hunter alpha head gear

false track collecting also adds to the research level

The level up thing you see in hunt relates to your scoutfly level, not your monster research level. You can see the scoutfly level when you open your map; level 1 lets your scoutflies find monster tracks, level 2 you can see the monster, and level 3 you can see its status (most notably skull icons letting you know you can capture).

I guess I'll just create a farming set. I was planning on making one when I got Iceborne but I assume I have most of the materials for what I need anyway.
