MHFU
With content for World ending, and me not owning a switch I've picked up MHFU and am considering getting 3U as well. I've put a few hours into it, but its not really clicking. Like, I just can't fully get into it. Any veterans have advice on how to get into the old world style of game?

Freedom Unite was kinda "meh" to me, I say give 4U a try. It's my favorite MH game out of all of them.

4U is probably the best overall game of the older style. I'd suggest giving that one a go rather than FU. I started with the japanese version of FU, so I've got a soft spot for it, but, it's jank as hell, even compared to the later games of the same style.

I don't have a 3ds though, and if I'm buying a new device I'd rather get the switch for Rise and Generations

There are ways around not having a 3ds, friend.

I love 3U, 4U and Gen but couldn't get into FU, it is lacking a lot of things

Anything before 3rd gen is where all the stereotypes of old world really become apparent.

To be honest, i'd kinda advise you that. I agree with Seamus about 4U will be most likely the best traditional Monster Hunter out there, but especially considering you're coming from Monster Hunter World i can't help but feel like Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate might be more be your cup of tea, because it was the first Game which brought somewhat of a change and twist to the MH Series. Like Skills which some were added later on as combos in MH World. Not to mention (i believe atleast) that it might be the MH with the most Content yet. And like you said, especially if you are open to grab a switch and MH Rise, i'd rather go with GU. (Plus, if you enjoy the MH Universe you also get the Spin-off Monster Hunter Stories 2 where the first one was absolutely great already, though you need to like turnbased combat and pokemonesque catching).

FU was one of the greatest Games of it's time, i'd argue it was the first MH which truly had an impact to the series, and it was one of the hardest ones (imho). But i can see why people couldn't get into it anymore because it didn't age very well).

MHFU for me is the best MH i've ever played, it has a lot of content and zones, plus different species of monsters (carapaceons, Fanged beasts, flyinf wyverns, elder dragons, etc), and I prefer his jewelry system and gameplay mechanics.
In my oppinion the worst of PSP is MHP3rd because of the lack of content and new easy mechanics because of the combos.
I started with the MHF, MHF2, MHFU, and MHP3rd in PSP, then the MHW in PC and I understand why a lot of people don't like the gameplay style of the old ones.
The problem is that in the first MH games all the movements are very simple, attack1, attack2, roll and that's all, you don't have combos neither easy ways to evade monster attacks. Plus the monsters move like robots and the hitboxes are horrible (plesioth meme) and change area continuously.
You can see as the first games are more difficult than the new ones because of this things and any casul can't afford kill the top tier badass monsters like in MHW.
Another thing that I miss in MHW is the feeling of the hunting, now you go direct to kill the monster and don't feel like you are lost in the middle of nowhere wiyh a creature that can kill you with one hit.
For example with Iceborne, the new mechanics implemented (like the clutch claw), make the game easier and that's happening since the MHP3rd new abilities until now. That's the reason why now MH franchise is famous and with the old games nobody knows nothing about them, the accesibility to everybody making easiest games.
I recommend play the old ones because are very challenging, but only if you like masochism, XD.

MHFU is a pretty fun game. 4 characters with different weapon usage but I always fallback to the Heavy Bowgun User. Autoload is an amazing skill. It's such a shame to see it never comeback into the newer games.

Personally if you're having a hard time playing MHFU. Take a break from any monster hunter game and boot up MHFU. You'll find it...different yet the objective is still the same. Capture or Slay the monster.

I would recommend getting a 3DS for 3U and Gen. Those are the only MH games I played on 3DS...that and Stories. Damn, I really wish they made Monster Hunter Stories two or something. Great game.

EDIT: Okay, so there is a Monster hunter stories two coming. Awesome.

As someone who played in the following order: Monster Hunter World > Monster Hunter 1 > Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate

I can say that Monster Hunter is typically the type of series you move forward in, not backwards. I had to try HARD to like MH1, and Generations is fun, but if you played MHW, not as fun. You pretty much have to convince yourself that it is it's own game. I will say though that generations is basically all the games packed into one, with a staggering 93 monsters.

Make sure you are trying all the weapons because they feel VERY different from World mechanically. Also you pretty much have to accept less hand holding. No damage numbers, scout flies, you have to throw paint balls at monsters to track them, est.

MHFU is still my favorite, but MHP3rd is probably the best. When you're going back to older MH games I would recommend that you just take it slow. Go into missions with a set goal in mind and make sure to keep your inventory slim when entering missions. Be sure to focus on the village missions and not the guild mission, if you weren't already. Specifically with MHP3rd you can find a PSP emulator online and an HD version of MHP3rd which is actually just the Japanese PS3 version so it looks amazing and runs on the PSP emulator. Also if you were worried about it being Japanese, there are English patches you can find everywhere. Low key the biggest improvement to MH with MHW is that potions now cost 2 herbs to craft instead of a herb and a blue mushroom.
