Another Side weapon is Long Sword . I started learning this weapon since I can’t solo Ancient Leshen with bow in base world days .
Learned LBG thanks to sieges
Learned HBG because at first Glutton was broken and want to bully low tier monsters without effort. But after speedrunning AT Nergigante with shieldless Glutton . I started actually learn HBG and all types of ammos
Learned CB because I think I need to understand at least 1 morph weapon in game . That’s all .
It also depends on your personal preference of gameplay from other games, you like to deal a lot of damage with a single hit? Do you enjoy playing as the tank? What about support? Maybe you enjoy fast weapons with a lot of evasion?
I feel like the Insect Glaive is the weapon that is the most mobile, a Monster can't get away from you, and your bug is always hitting it, it's a super versatille weapon and it's fascinating to me to see that most people play nowadays with the Long Sword, it wasn't that way in MH3U, and I felt very powerful with that weapon, because in my opinion it dashed out a lot of attack and gave you good mobility.
while i have my favorite's. i still use almost all the weapon types. (exept the lances they left a poor taste in my mouth)
there is no shame in that. just use them all. you will be a better hunter in the long run
i know i got better thanks to switching weapons
i used duel blades in world
then sword and shield post game world and insect glaive too.
picked up charge blade for iceborne.
then switched to switch-axe in iceborne's post game
then picked up hammer on a second playtrough.
and in genult i play great sword. and prowler.
thats almost half the weapon roster.
there is no need to main a weapon. flip flopping is a bit more expensive as you need more weapons than if you just main one. but i found it worth it to swap between them
tldr: just use all of the weapons mate
Don't be ashamed that you haven't found a specific weapon to main. It might help you to narrow down what weapon you want by looking at the properties that define your playstyle. Do you like to shoot at monsters from a distance? Do you want to be the guy first into a fight? What kind of archetypes do you gravitate towards in other games and media? Hell it might just be that you're going to be stuck maining all weapons, which certainly has the benefit of being able to choose any weapon to counter any monster at any time.
If you can avoid narrowing your playstyle to a single or even just a couple of weapons and still progress/have fun, you'll probably turn out to be a decent hunter at the very least.
As for the question what made me more or less main a weapon: It just happened. If one starts to fall back to a few weapons for more difficult hunts, chances are one will sooner or later fall back to a single one that has proven to work very well time and again.
