palico ai is by design clumsy and goofy
decoy can be useful sometimes
Also, in case you're new/unaware, as the Palico gadget levels up you unlock the ability to specifically command the palico to use the different abilities offered by the gadget.
But meanwhile I think the Palico just doesn't really work with ranged weapons :/
While the Palico A.I. has never been very smart in all of MonHun, in previous games the Palico had no limit on its aggro range as long as you're in the same area as the monster. This means that as soon as the monster draws your Palico's aggro, your cat will keep fighting as long as neither you nor the monster cross an area transition to leave the area.
MHW removed area transitions in favour of much larger, more open maps. But, when they did this, they had to introduce a range limit on the Palico aggro. This range limit on Palico aggro is insanely small.
Even when using melee weapons, its not uncommon for a single large knockback to knock you out of Palico aggro range. Ever wondered why your Palico decides to just runs to stand next to you while you're stunned instead of continuing to fight the monster or knocking you out of stun? The Palico is doing this because the monster knocked you out of Palico aggro range and your Palico deaggro'd and reset to neutral.
The only way to ensure that your Palico remains in combat mode is to stay relatively close to the monster with your weapon drawn. Sheathing your weapon makes your Palico de-aggro faster. Both Stun and Paralysis force you to re-enter sheathed weapon state so that makes your Palico de-aggro faster too.
Strangely enough, given the topic of discussion, I find Shieldspire to be the best Palico option... though Coral Orchestra is also a good one.
i dont know what to say to you dude, my palico seemed useless in base world, but now in MR hunts when i watch him work, he actually is ultra aggressive, staying to combo the monster, and using abilities pretty often.
i think maybe dont bother paying attention to him. when i wanted him to heal me, he wouldn't and that would be frustrating right? but.. if you dont take damage in the first place, you dont need to rely on a cat's help.
so try to change the viewpoint. view what he does as 'a bonus' instead of trying to expect an instant return from the palico.
(im ok if you want to remake your character and name the palico Useless though.)
