They didn't fix them in Iceborne, scaling the damage and health to overly ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥t amounts is artificial difficulty, instead of scaling to fairer amounts and improving the moveset of something like AT Nerg for actual fun challenging battles. They did this and just didn't think to fix it? Over 500 defense doesn't matter, he still slams you for 2/3rds of your health (not to mention if you dare to not stay topped up, forcing you to keep playing defensively instead of dealing damage. Using early Master Rank stuff doesn't cut it either, apparently, he still just ♥♥♥♥s for no reason.
EDIT: Finally got a single ticket, managed to kill him (Took 3 tries, each time building more for defensive skills. Got like 675 defense and it was still a pain) and I got my Gamma pants.

My HR Rathalos with Nerg coil has a natural defense of 377. Including my armorcharm/talon, that's 407. I could augment if I had the mats for that but IDK how much more defense that'd give me. I should note, my current MR armor gets me somewhere near 539, not including Armordrug/seed buffs.

There are so many easy options to cheese him.
sticky 3 guns
or combine it with smoke bombs if you want the real easy mode
use a smoke bomb> fire a clip of 4 stickies into his face> use another smoke bomb> repeat> forcast if you ran out of crafting stuff for smoke bombs and restock at the camp

hammer or dual blade work like a charm too
ls has the good old forsight slash

spread3 or pierce3 with scope are also great for the fight

People have been fighting AT monsters in base game using HR gears only. I did solo AT Nerg before Iceborne in HR gears.

You can skip AT monsters as they are not required to complete the story. Proceed Iceborne all the way.
