Why can't I just play with a friend? Why is this so hard and difficult?
Literally all I want to do is coop with a friend and there's just no way of doing it.

There is. Create an online session, set it so only friends can join. Any steam friends you have can then join your game.

Did that. Have friend in game. We can't play together. There's no way to play together. We both unlocked multiplayer by beating Jagras

You both need to watch the cutscene of story missions in order to join the other. After it says you can send out an SOS, you need to return from quest and join your friend or vice versa.

CAMPAIGN CONTENT has these cutscenes you have to watch. Once the cutscene is watched, you can EASILY join each other. Both of you just watch the cutscene, one abandon, then join the other.

Every other quest that's not a "main story" quest can just be flatout joined. It's not a big deal, you just have to clear the main quests either solo or AFTER watching the cutscenes together...in fact even later on (endgame content) you can even join quests that have cutscenes. It's just the main story of the main game and dlc you have to watch.

Please actually read up on games before claiming there's no way to play together. MHW actually has super easily accessible multiplayer, the only hurdle are the cutscenes which are only like 5-10% of the quests.

I'm not on a story quest. I'm on an expedition. Just want to run around and hunt with friend. Why can't I just do that? Why is this game so anti multiplayer?

I can't even drop an SOS

Expeditions are not the same as quests and you have to complete STORY expeditions solo. The game is not anti multiplayer, you have to do SOME stuff solo - like 99% of mp games, there is "solo" content.

I promise as soon as you get past the solo stuff you can CONSTANTLY drop in and out of quests. If you have a none-story expedition, they SHOULD just be able to join you if you drop an SOS and set a password.

I will say expeditions are...not the way to hunt monsters. You need to do quests. Expeditions are just there more for the meme then anything. Questing will give you actual rewards and progress. As soon as you "find a monster" on an expedition, read your OBJECTIVES. If it says 'hunt x monster" you can LEAVE and rehost it with your friend.

This whole series is the exact opposite of "anti-multiplayer" however this game is most certainly "anti-expedition"

Please don't get the impression that this is an open world game where you run around and hunt monsters that randomly spawn in via expeditions. There is a mode designed that way in the DLC but that doesn't really exist in the base game (even if you own the dlc, you need to beat the game first). Expeditions are only there to explore the maps, gather materials, and test stuff out safely thanks to infinite lives. However, because you have the safety net of infinite lives, the game gives fewer rewards for hunting monsters and puts you on a strict time limit of around ~10 minutes per monster on expeditions.

Basically, just don't do expeditions. Just do quests. You will eventually get quests to hunt every monster in the game. Don't feel like you'll get a big advantage for hunting a strong monster in an expedition before you get the quest to hunt it (trust me, I tried).

If for some reason you REALLY want to go on an expedition and just wander around with a friend, you should be able to shoot an SOS so I don't understand why that isn't working. I've done it before. But just do quests instead.

Just remember to watch the mid-quest cutscene first and then return (not abandon) from the quest. Then you can join your friends/they can join you.
