Anyone have any tips for learning gunlance?
I feel so slow using this damn thing, is there a way to get around it's low mobility?

The easiest way to transition to gunlance is by using the wide style GL’s. They focus on normal shelling and comboing rapid pokes to weave their offense together. These attacks are also very quick allowing you to put your shield to good use as well. The when the monster is downed you can use your wyvern fire (which has increased damage with wide style) to melt their faces off. The mobility will still take some getting used to but it will be easier in this style than the other two. You’ll have to get used to hopping around in all four directions in order to reposition yourself as well as dodge small quick attacks. Also make sure to use the forward running attack to close ground on an enemy, maybe do a hop or two before hand to space it right as well.

I think some people use evade extender to cover more distance with the hops. Beyond that i can’t really help much, this is my least favourite weapon. I can use it, but I am by no means proficient with it.

Evade Extender is the way to go there. Learn to pivot and hop backwards in a moments notice, and you will move as fast as a sprinting player from place to place. Beware your stamina though, as you may not be in a position to block or otherwise dodge if you spent it all catching up.

I use Quick Sheath a lot. EE is good but I treat is more as a cherry on the cake rather than a staple. And Normal GL seems to be easiest cuz the long approach move (cant remember the name- just forward+R1) is a great way to cover the distance and it is an obligatory move for the combo that ends in full burst. so, you have to use it, and if you do you get there faster.

I practiced my GL skills on HR Kushala and Vaal - seriously I killed about 100 each. Hopping and running aroud those two is a must.

The Funlance Dance is more engaging than it has been in past titles. Both Lance and Gunlance feel more mobile, though their mobility can be hard-walled by monsters like Velkhana due quite literally to her walls. Gunlance can cover a lot of ground with Evade Extender, you get some amazing MR Zorra armor from the Guiding Lands that covers most of your bases and each shell type has a different playstyle.

I prefer Wide for its accuracy and quick blocks. If for some reason you don't feel you can block an incoming attack in time (blocks after pokes are a bit slower) you can optionally hop out of the way instead thanks to the distance gained from Evade Extender. Each weapon has different distance values gained with Evade Extender and Gunlance happens to get a huge boost from it.

I main LS but Gunlance is my go to weapon for small monsters like Kirin. And I pick Normal shelling lv 7. Imo, Normal GL is meta for small size annoying monsters.

everyone's already talked about backhopping to death so here's what I got:

you can dodge to cancel a charged shelling

try interrupting a lunging upthrust with a shelling shot halfway thru. it'll keep you in stance to combo into lateral thrusts. good for aggression, because otherwise you'll be stuck in the upswing combo.

a little patience goes a long way. Learn to dodge, pivot, and then fire without accidentally doing a reload. the same timings can be used to jab and block, as well.

lunging into a wallrun will give you an air slam that reloads your wyvern stake.

backhopping off a ledge and then immediately slamming will put you back on the ledge, spam this attack if you like.

leaping out of a sliding attack while wearing a glider mantle will cause you to sheathe your weapon automatically. oh PS: aerial attacks with gunlance are v fun

sometimes an upswing -> slam -> wide sweep combo is good for tail severing. It also makes for decent DPS in its own right if you don't have the time to reload.

Always point your GL at the sky at the end of a quest and do endless shelling combos and reloads.
