Frost Fang Barioth and Shields
I've only fought him twice, once with a very mobile charge blade and again with a very stationary gunlance. Half of the moves in his arsenal exist to just ♥♥♥♥ shield users.

I run Guard 5 and Guard up and none that does me a bit of good if the monster is going constantly spew essentially unavoidable frost that makes me drop my shield. Gunlance isn't a mobile weapon. I have Evasion Extender 3, but still, my hops don't cover a lot of ground.

I'm genuinely unsure of how GL users are supposed to deal with this. Aside from switch to a more mobile weapon.

As for the op, GL does suffer from that lack of mobility. Best thing I would say is eat ele resist to tank the ice more so you can get out and heal, or run Quick Sheath instead of Evade Extend so you can just put it away and get out faster instead of slow walking. That, or learn the telegraphs for the move triggering the ice and just move out of the way ahead of time, treating it like it's unblockable instead.

Try running gamma namielle's set. It's full of utility skills and slots for making anything mobile.

Also, perform back hops with GL. Those are the ones that cover major ground.

It's possible with GL and Lance but it feels like an absolutely terrible fight. Capcom did not balance this monster properly at all. Which is especially disappointing considering lance is already most likely the worst weapon in the game. It's becoming more and more clear at this point that Capcom has no interest in balancing the game.

I will say, there are some attacks that are unlockable, even to guard up, which supposedly let's you block the unlockable, it's annoying when your block the unlockable skill investment does not actually let you block the number unblockable...

Safi's grab, deviljhoe's pounce...

Sad shield noises

I actually surprisingly enjoyed it with lance, even though I didn't expect to. The telegraph for the ice spews are pretty lengthy, long enough to maneuver towards him to get inside the arc of its breath, just needed to train myself out of instictively trying to block it.

Yup the ice glue make shield unusable against it. I try fighting with lance the first time. Very big mistake.:steamfacepalm: Have no trouble using Swagaxe, IG, and GS.

I'm glad you enjoyed the fight. But if you are going to maneuver instead of blocking as much as you have to in this fight, why not just use a different weapon?

Because I can still block even non-ice-spew attack he can throw at me?

Understandable. What's your fastest completion time with lance?

Lance is actually extremely strong, being one of the best weapons to use for group fights. It sounds like youre just bad with Lance.

like 15 min or something so far? but I don't play for time, never have. Brought my favourite, comfy, build and had a good time.

Frontal arc? Hop, Guard Dash, or Leaping Thrust forwards and I'm good.
Long straight line? 1 guard dash sideways and I'm clear.
Big area? honestly I dunno, but I'd assume any weapon, maybe except IG would get caught in it all the same.

(F.F.) Barioth has lots of physical attacks; hip checks, charges, lunges, tail sweeps, and of course the big fang-stab. All of that a shield remains perfectly adequate, if not your best, answer for.

Oh boy, literally everything you've just said is the opposite of the truth. Lance has the worst speed run times of any weapon in the game. It is often also regarded as one of the worst multiplayer weapons because of how easily Lancers get stunned and the Lance charge can be really disruptive. Can I ask where you are getting this information from? I have 5.3k quests completed on the Lance btw so you can spare the insults.

Yup my best time is around the same (15'06 I think). But like you I wasn't really going for time too much. I've also found that he is incredibly easy to mount. With the glider mantle you can easily get 3 mounts in a fight if you have the patience for them.

Personal experience with users that can really work lance. It's honestly the best it's been in years, and with it's ability to tenderize with guard points is insane. Plus it has mad hops, and high mobility. Spped runs mean jack all, especially when they restrict parts of MH's combat.
