Rule of thumb is slow weapons use raw, fast weapons use elements and status. Not limited to, but they just do it better.
Thunder would only be good monsters weak to Thunder, where as para would work on all majority of monsters, but would work way better on some then others.
Check your hunter log and see what a monster is weak to, and bring that to the fight
your normal attacks get some damage from element so end game longswords like ruiner can stay competitive but raw is the priority for longsword with the rathian ls taking the win (not including the event weapons like safi).
Make good use of it or maybe prectice on some smaller monsters (Dodo, Jag, etc.) see how it works for ya.
