How to fight Alatreon with greatsword??????

Greatsword user here, never used any other weapon, gotten through all of iceborne without any problems, how in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hell do I fight this ♥♥♥♥ dragon

There's one strategy I know which is just to forgo all elements, and just build for raw.

Fight solo, with a build only for raw damage and fortify.
Eat for Felyne Safeguard and (optional) Felyne Foodie

Suicide every single nova, they'll only make you stronger.

yeah, the above method works well. or you could find a group where the other players are focusing on element and you just do raw damage and break those horns.

This, and most importantly, your team will share the pain. If you try it, figthing him alone is much easier.

It's definetly possible, but it's really hard to pull off. I'm a GS, CB, SA and hammer main and I decided to switch to the CB for this fight as I just couldn't pull it off with the GS. Even with a frostcraft set it's quite difficult to deal enough elemental damage to survive the Escaton Judgement.

While it is possible, I think that youre better off switching to another weapon for this fight as trying to beat him with the GS will be extremely frustrating. The GS just lacks the elemental damage to make this fight survivable. I'm not saying it isn't possible, but there are easier ways to beat him.

Good ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ god, yeah you gotta be really good to solo with a great sword, otherwise you're not making it.

Long story short... If you want to fight it solo. Eat for Felyne Safe Guard, and then just go full raw. You have four lives to power through the monster.

Otherwise, I highly suggest using a different weapon with better elemental capabilities.

There is also that icefish greatswords from the event quests, it has a ton.if element on it, and if you can bust the horns, he should mostly stay in fire and dragon mode...that is...if you have the quest where he starts in fire, it will at least start in fire with the special assignment

other then that...there isn't much you can do, eat for felyne safeguard and get an extra cart for solo, once if you cart again after 10 minutes use a gourmet voucher, and eat for felyne safeguard again. Rinse repeat

I doubt it. In the speedrun video posted by Kaildor Draigo above, the speedrunner appears to be using a kulve fire greatsword vs. alatreon's ice form and JUST BARELY manages to hit the threshold right before Alatreon does the first nova... The fact that a speedrunner using an optimized build and playing like a god can barely stop the nova demonstrates how utterly bad the greatsword's elemental attack multipliers are...

The alatreon hunt just exemplifies how poorly the developers balanced elemental vs raw attack in this game. I really hope they fix this in the next Monster Hunter iteration.
